Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk say human population not nearly big enough: ‘If we had a trillion humans, we would have at any given time a thousand Mozarts’ “I think in a lot of these endeavors we're very like-minded,” Bezos said of himself and Musk regarding getting humans into space.

I don’t know why this incenses me as much as it does, but it does:

we very likely have a thousand plus Mozarts *right now*. But they make non-Western art in economically destitute conditions so they have to do other work to pay bills; if you cared, UBI’d be more important to you than going to space

I think dumbing things down for the general pop is responsible for the situation we're in. e.g. all official medical info on the internet is so bland and basic that people fall prey to quacks who provide them with seemingly more information.

It's not exactly that companies have to pay taxes for engineers - they can't write off engineer salaries as expenses, resulting in taxes on phantom profits.

This mostly hurts smaller companies who are just breaking even, but yes is also responsible for the firings/slow hires at the big corps.

Project 2025 visualized as thousands of small nodes, labeled and colored by category, such as one seemingly for space operations & policy, or another for abortions, Title IX, & gender. There are at least two dozen clusters visible from this screenshot. The overall shape is a blob with clear pinched structures.

The 900+ pages of #Project2025 are daunting, and that's on purpose. So imagine collecting all those sentences and exploring them as different colored islands.

It should. There have been delays (payments are supposed to come through next day but it's been up to a week sometimes), but if the main award has an NOA and an active PMS account, the payments should go through.

It's getting a lot of attn today. But even before today most of the country had very little idea of what has happened at NIH or through it the entire ecosystem of biomedical research in the US. Simply put, Musk, Kennedy & Trump exploded a bomb right in the middle of cancer cure research in the US.

Just in NIH grants, It looks like beautiful Iowa City, home of the U of Iowa, will lose $71m in funding. That's almost $1k per resident. And that's before all the other cuts to SSA, FDA, etc.

Anyone in Iowa City that can offer more insight?

From my perspective, this document shows such profound misunderstandings of NIH and science I really don't know what to say

It is a collection of bad ideas strung together around irritation around the response to the Covid pandemic (which NIH actually had little to do with)

NIH Cuts Create a Lost Generation of Scientists Trump administration attacks on the National Institutes of Health mean biomedical research will become less ambitious, less competitive and result in fewer breakthroughs.

🧪 The attack on science could have a generational effect. We risk losing a wave of early-career researchers to these cuts. And biomedical science in the US will be less ambitious, less competitive & lead to fewer breakthroughs. So much is at stake. My latest for @opinion.bloomberg.com (🎁 link):
