I'm a bit late to this announcement but wanted to share that the newest issue of the JJS is now out! Very proud of the essays and book reviews inside. My coeditor Sabine Frühstück, the book review editor Jessamyn Abel, and our managing editors David and now Athena all did incredible work.

My grandfather used to say that before anyone runs for public office, they should be required to spend 6 months working a customer service job. In addition to all these skills, I think it teaches you a baseline level of human empathy.

Dammit, I enjoyed their dice advent calendar a few years back. What a shame.

I can't say I'm all that familiar with American gaming mags of this era, but every time I'm working with LOGiN or Comptiq or any of the others, I always get a kick out of the interior illustrations. Just chibi lil guys! If American mags weren't doing the same, they missed out.

Alice is Missing is a 90-minute, silent TRPG with no GM played via text message for 3-5 players. Players are the friends of Alice, a high schooler who's gone missing. Characters work to figure out what happened to Alice with the help of storytelling prompts on cards drawn at certain time marks.

110 mins 2x/wk. I split it over two classes: the back half of last Thursday was given to initial character creation (and I definitely needed to give them more time on that), with suspect/location work done in a shared doc and voicemails recorded over the weekend as homework. (And agreed! Yay!!)

It's a first-time experiment that started as an intrusive thought when I was floundering for a good way to propel discussion of Sputnik Sweetheart. As Sumire in much of that novel propels the narrative through her absence, I thought students might be able to access similar ideas through AiM.

Definitely need to spend more time on the pre-work in the prior class, though. Something gets lost (or at least degraded) if students are hurriedly scribbling down just a few character notes before the game or narrating a voicemail at the end because they didn't record one.

Ran Alice is Missing in my Japanese lit class today. Two playgroups of 4 each. It's a very weird game to watch as an external observer, but I think it went well. Nervous laughter throughout and bursting straight into conversation post-game point to yes, but I'll know more after Thursday's debrief.

Today is the first day of Ramadan, the first day of Adar, Lunar New Year and Mardi Gras.

This means that for one reason or another, the majority of humans on the planet have a reason to eat fried food, and that is beautiful.

If it were pulling that information from things stored locally offline that I had actively input, and a photo the person had consented to me taking of them, then absolutely. Alas.
