It boils down to now the fact that other countries recognize the strategic importance of industry and subsidize their shipyards up to 50 or 60%, and in the US we have no such value on heavy industry, and haven’t since Reagan.

This is an excellent point. I’ve worked at FMM and study naval architecture at one of the last academies that still teach it in the United States. The United States civilian shipyard industry has rotted to its core and any large vessel we produce is made from sections we import from Korea.
