the goal is to make men better dates, mates, and partners, because being partnered is dramatically better for most men than being unpartnered and because women are quite reasonably seeking more.

The BLS firing is a textbook example of how personalist authoritarianism causes policy nightmares. It's like Trump is trying to prove why liberal democratic guardrails aren't some kind of luxury, but essential for good governance

I have pretty much always been a data person. And more than a bit of a technocrat. So I value consistent, objective data.

But I also did campaign assessments in Afghanistan. So I also value leaders who want to know what's really happening. And have real contempt for those who don't.

Look, I know that D.C. Democrats are skittish about institutional reforms, but they should absolutely do this.

These changes are badly needed but, more important, they'd likely appeal to voters who have proven with Trump that they'll give *anyone* who promises to shake things up a chance.

This is one of the big themes of @abenewman.bsky.social and my book, Underground Empire. The US economic security apparatus looks ferocious from the outside. From the inside, it's held together by spit, duct-tape and underinformed people trying to deal with the crisis of the moment.

I do remember reading a history book as a kid that applied this frame to a degree that I learned was clearly wrong.

I think the universalist frame can be quite appropriate for oppression/war crimes. But the power disparity required for genocide means the targets will be othered minority groups.

I think @nilo.bsky.social is right, and also that since U.S. federal fiscal budget is a lot more important than state budgets, we don't need to normalize to the same extent as is just necessary for intra-EU or cross-national comparisons.

US only has 25% of all Patriot missile interceptors needed for Pentagon’s military plans Exclusive: Low stockpiles for the crucial Patriot missile interceptors led to Trump administration pausing transfers to Ukraine

Europe's collective action procurement problem is exemplified by air defense. If I was in a European MOD and given a budget to buy high-end air defense, buying the American PATRIOT is the obvious, least risky choice. Makes perfect sense. But...

Jamie Dimon's analysis that Europe's GDP has gone from 90% of US to 65% in last 10-15 years is based on comparing the two using market exchange rates.

On that basis, EU GDP has just jumped 10% in the last six months against the US.

I must have missed the "WHY IS THE EU ECONOMY BOOMING?" pieces

I think they hoped Trump would lower the overall number of immigrants (I'm not sure if the authorized/unauthorized distinction matters to Rogan) in the country by targeting "the bad ones," believing his lie that much of the immigrant population are "the bad ones."

NASA just won an Emmy for our live broadcast of the total solar eclipse last year. We produced a documentary film about the James Webb Space Telescope that's out in theaters and on Netflix. We have podcasts, we write feature stories. People wear the agency logo on t-shirts. We're still getting cut.

Opinion | Europe Is Making a Big Mistake

There is a lot of strawmen in this piece and its obtuse to the Russia threat/US abandonment. But it is a prime example of the backlash coming if Euro leaders blindly commit to unrealistic defense spending targets and don't focus on efficiency. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/30/o...

My take on the NATO summit. Lots of unintended consequences with Europeans agreeing to something that few intend to deliver on. NATO ignoring its major challenge, fighting together as Europe with less US. That requires deep reforms, not vague spending pledges.

Attewell convincingly argued that Martin is ultimately a romantic. Like, he wrote for 1987 Beauty & the Beast series. But I do think it is a betrayal of his calling that he hasn't made the hard pruning choices necessary to see that vision through. I hope he gives someone else the opportunity (2/2).

Fundamentally, it is dang hard for a U.S.-located company, especially in the defense sector, to employ a chokepoint against the U.S. government.

The panopticon side of things is far more plausible. Financial and communications companies, which would include X, could wield information.
