This fear is particularly common in highly unequal and individualistic societies.

Because in that context, it's easy for fear-mongers to convince parents that any so-called "imperfection" will doom their kid to a life of struggle and doom them to a life of judgment for having an "imperfect" kid.

I am so tired of tech bros acting like history is nonexistent; that they're the first person to ever have a thought. This IS eugenics, he just hasn't bothered to know anything beyond CRISPR (or, he has, and he is acting in pure bad faith.)

Two screenshots designed in the style of Spotify Wrapped but they're presented as being a (nonexistent) Bluesky Wrapped

Screenshot 1:
You spent 738 posts on the following topics:
1. Dunking on the New York Times op-ed section
2. Talking about drama at New York Magazine
3. Weighing in on the New York City mayoral election

Screenshot 2:
Based on this, your most likely place to be located would be:
New York, NY

Instead, swipe to see where, based on geotagging, you actually live

Sometimes I’m happy that my Alma Mater closed shop two years ago, because now I don’t have to watch it sell out to the soulless tech bubble in such vile and transparent fashion.

Also, I know we’re history teacher but sometimes my jaw drops at how little changes. It feels so tired to say β€œthis could be written today,” but boy howdy could it

I just took a screenshot and sent it to my fellow exvangelical and our fellow excatholic friend (and my poor friend who grew up normal is in a group chat with us freaks so she has to endure this type of thing often)

the invasion of Afghanistan is among the most horrific recent chapters of the long history of elite impunity in the US. this coda is grim but fitting - the govt practically explicitly affirming that it should only be Afghans who live with the consequences amid fading public memory of the atrocity

Iran's capital must relocate due to dire water situation, president insists Tehran's troubles are a red flag for thirsty cities around the globe.

Seems important. Let's build a few more AI datacenters to figure out how to ration water effectively.

Relying on ChatGPT to teach you about a topic leaves you with shallower knowledge than Googling and reading about it, according to new research that compared what more than 10,000 people knew after using one method or the other.

To me, the biggest tell that AI is massively overvalued is that Big Tech has to keep shoving it in our faces. I just noticed Chrome has a 'Gemini' button at the top of the browser, and I'm getting prompts all over the place, including Zoom, to 'try AI.'

My takeaway from every new Epstein revelation is that some powerful people victimized many powerless young women, many more knew, some actively enabled it--and we're still being told that MeToo and accountability for sexual violence have gone too far

I’m still so angry about this, OpenAI (judging from the chat) knows vulnerable users are engaging with the tech like this; they aggressively sell it to the education sector either way; they do not care to warn users/put in safeguards; because they can blame harm/deaths on already vulnerable people.
