My grandfather used asbestos in his work and kept it in their garage. He, my grandmother, his son, and my mother all died of cancer. His remaining son was just diagnosed.

Please tag me in some worthwhile non-political accounts. Arts, humor, nature, travel … anything that will bring some respite from all this bad news.

I can’t say a lot more because two years later, the legal battle rages on. Please be careful and question absolutely everything your insurance says and does.

The junker moved all surviving furniture into the garage for free. We paid a packer to do the kitchen and a company came and treated the furniture. Less than $1,000 total.

Another assigned vendor came to quote costs for removing surviving furniture (it wasn’t much), pack up things like pots and pans, clean and store during the rebuild. This was $60,000 and would have come out of our contents coverage.

Our contractor told us he does the rest of the remediation, such as treatment for smoke, as a part of the rebuild and this is required. There was no need to spend $50,000 of coverage on this.

We got a junker to come in and get rid of debris/toss junk, it cost less than $3,000.

Example: our assigned vendor quoted us $50,000 for β€œremediation” - cleanup. This $50,000 would have come out of our rebuilding coverage.

Your insurance company will have assigned vendors for which they will pay up front. This will be attractive because you are cash strapped and stressed out. Be careful.

Know your policy: you have contents, rebuilding, living expenses. All are separate and you can’t spend less on one to get more on the other.

We are survivors of a house fire (not a wildfire). In case it can help someone, here are some things we learned that I haven’t seen posted.

Read your entire insurance policy. Your company is not your friend. Document every phone convo in writing. Keep track of time off work. Start looking for temporary housing only after you know your coverage for this particular. AND look into mental health treatment right away. πŸ’•
