I prefer the unchained monk to the original monk for mostly this reason. But I’ve found both manageable in actual play until high levels, when frankly a lot of pathfinder classes start to break down due to overcomplexity of single round actions.

(And just to make it clear, I love the idea of the Magus, which is why it's on my list. My objection is not simulationist in nature. I don't care that a Magus making faster sword attacks than a Fighter is "unrealistic". I care that the complexity feels out-of-genre and slows down the gaming table.)

I mean, all true, but I don't think that makes it better -- I feel like it's supposed to be a class that blends a spellcaster with a fighter, not an uber-complex high risk class that can make more attacks with a sword than a fighter can for some reason while also casting a spell.

In theory, this is counterbalanced by the penalties to hit from spell-combat's two-weapon fighting, but I don't find that those disadvantages play out in real play, and they themselves are mechanically complex enough that I left them out of the explanation for fear of getting them wrong. 7/7

Finally, because they can do this with a cantrip, it's that complex almost every single round, and they get to make two primary weapon attacks for the "cost" of potentially also doing 1d3 or 2d3 of cantrip damage on top of the weapon damage. 6/7

So, if the 2nd level Magus is wielding a longsword and can cast Shocking Grasp, they can take a long complicated turn and if it pays off with two hits, do 2d8+str+2d6 electric, with a fair chance of doing 3d8+str+str+4d6 electric if they crit on the Spellstrike. 5/7

Nutshell: With Spell Combat, explicitly allowed to do a full round action where they attack with a weapon and cast a spell. W/Spellstrike, if the spell is a touch spell, they get a free opportunity to deliver it with weapon. If they hit, they get do weapon damage _again_, plus spell damage too. 4/7

This makes the low-level Magus' turn in the order of combat pretty unmanageable. I takes more rolling than a typical 6th level character, involves a lot of careful rules reading, and frustrates other players whose characters only get one damage roll while the Magus is making three. 3/7

The most notable issue is that a lot of people feel (with some justification as written) that the combo of Spell Combat + Spellstrike allows two weapon attacks plus a spell attack -- effectively making it possible for a 2nd level character to do weapon/weapon/spell damage in a single round. 2/7

Quick answer is that its rules need badly need simplification. On PFSRD the FAQ sidebar is longer than than the rules themselves.

Longer answer: While I don't think the class is bad as designed/intended, I've found way people play it leads to a lot of rules-dense cheese. 1/7
