Really liked THE CURRENTS, a lush & hypnotic Argentinian drama about a designer who unravels very stoically after a work trip gone awry. TIFF and NYFF slots should give writer-director Milagros Mumenthaler a much-deserved bump in recognition.
My review:
Shocker: I liked a movie in which Callum Turner is hot
08.09.2025 23:17 โ ๐ 37 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 1Another TIFF review! My Hollywood Reporter debut and already the word โhunkโ is in the headline. I cannot be stopped
06.09.2025 03:26 โ ๐ 80 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1TWINLESS deserves so much better than whatever dog-days dump release it's getting. Dylan O'Brien gives one of the year's best, most surprising performances, & the film is twisted, funny & perceptive, w/shades of Almodovar. Super promising for writer/director/costar James Sweeney.
05.09.2025 19:49 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It's eight years since Kathryn Bigelow's last film & she hasn't missed a beat. A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE is a crackling thriller, precision-tooled, viscerally immersive, very much of a piece with THE HURT LOCKER and ZERO DARK THIRTY. Great stuff. #Venezia2025

Jim Jarmusch is working in a PATERSON vein in his funny, tender, minor-key triptych FATHER MOTHER SISTER BROTHER, a beautifully realized ensemble piece with not a single forced note of humor or poignancy. One of the #Venezia2025 competition standouts.

Anxious times can yield exceptional horror movies and the 21st century has had plenty of both. Hereโs 25 bone-chilling favorites that messed with my dreams, ranked. Feel free to respond with your own picks.

You don't have to love every single thing he's ever said to be excited about the idea of this guy as mayor of NYC.
27.06.2025 16:48 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Eva Victor's sharp, touching debut SORRY, BABY is out in theaters today, marking the arrival of an exciting triple threat.
My review out of Sundance back in January:
Happy 50th birthday, JAWS. A few thoughts on my undimmed obsession with Steven Spielbergโs ageless shark shocker. Might have something to do with growing up on Australian beaches in the years before sonar systems & air surveillance changed shark detection.

Jonathan Millet's GHOST TRAIL โ a riveting thriller about Syrian refugees in France โ is out today. Don't miss it. Adam Bessa has the soulful magnetism of a real star, and Tawfeek Barhom gives a chilling supporting turn. My review from last year's Cannes.
30.05.2025 17:16 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Panahi for the Palme! And other exciting picks from Binoche's Cannes jury, including Best Actress for the absolutely amazing Nadia Melliti from Hafsia Herzi's THE LITTLE SISTER. I sang her praises in my review.
24.05.2025 17:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The @thr.com critics saw some good movies, n'est-ce pas @david-rooney.bsky.social?
Here were the 20 Best of Cannes 2025:
Loved Hafsia Herzi's Cannes competition entry THE LITTLE SISTER, a superbly judged drama about a French Muslim's lesbian awakening. Has the confidence, texture & ache of an instant queer coming-of-age classic. Lead Nadia Melliti a knockout.
My review for @thr.com:
Proud to be nominated alongside my fab colleagues @david-rooney.bsky.social, @thefienprint.bsky.social, @ajhan.bsky.social and Lovia Gyarkye, as well as all the @thr.com nominees!

@thefienprint.bsky.social and @ajhan.bsky.social, though Netflix has a refreshing (Arctic) blast of cheer in NORTH OF NORTH.
This was a labor of, um, lust from me, @thefienprint.bsky.social, @ajhan.bsky.social, @david-rooney.bsky.social, Lovia Gyarkye and Robyn Bahr.
For folks suffering from WHITE LOTUS withdrawal or a post-DYING FOR SEX drought, we've got you. (And if we don't, you'll surely let us know!)
The Ratliff bros.' happy (?) ending, Laurie's heartfelt confession, Belinda breaking bad, Fabian's squeal, Mike White's inner conflict between cynicism + nihilism, and more WHITE LOTUS season 3 finale, as peerlessly dissected by @thefienprint.bsky.social + @ajhan.bsky.social

If you read one thing on the Lochlan/Saxon bromance, make it this blast of big-swing criticism.
24.03.2025 14:30 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Much to love (and argue with) on this list even for baseball non-fanatics!
07.03.2025 16:41 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 3Yes, THE PITT is a great counterintuitive comfort watch, ditto THE WHITE LOTUS (?!), and other sharp observations from @thefienprint.bsky.social and @ajhan.bsky.social about the current TV landscape.
25.02.2025 17:22 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 2 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 1I found the first 6 eps of THE WHITE LOTUS season 3 a major letdown โ sour and sordid without being particularly interesting โ after the masterful season 2. But
@thefienprint.bsky.social's review makes a good argument as to why I should just relax and go with it.
