According to my friend and divinity school classmate Bishop Matthew Heyd of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, Yeonsoo Go, daughter of an Episcopal priest, is being detained at a facility with no beds or showers or hot food. ⚓️

In 2019, LADOT held this demonstration to show how a safer intersection would work along this busy bike corridor. The safe routes to schools program brought in lots of grant funding to make these streets safer.

Why doesn't LADOT get to spend that money on simple solutions that we know will work?

Boston’s Big Dig, rerouting a whole-ass interstate? 22 years. One roundabout in LA? 16 years if you’re lucky.

It took Seattle around 15 years to demolish the Alaskan Way freeway, replace it with an underground tunnel, and create a new pedestrian waterfront. LA is looking at 16 years to maybe put in one roundabout.

This intersection has been approved for safety improvements which were first proposed in 2011 (!) and funded in 2019.

But because the people who put together the budget for the city do not prioritize saving the lives of our kids, these improvements are not scheduled to be completed until 2027

Having experienced this intersection and how busy and unsafe it is, it makes me feel ill to see these photos. A temporary roundabout six years ago and then nothing!

On Thursday, I was planning a crosswalk when I learned Nadir Gavarrete had been killed by a driver in Ktown. Nadir was 9. My son is 9.

Angelanos have to illegally paint their own crosswalks because the state and local Departments of Transportation are perfectly content with killing people. If you asked them right now, the DOT would say this intersection is functioning as intended — meaning its intended function includes killing you

Three days ago 9-year-old Nadir Gavarrete and his brother were hit by a driver at 4th & New Hampshire in Ktown. Nadir died and his brother is hospitalized. LA city officials are well aware of the dangers of this intersection and have done nothing.

Since people are talking about the razor thin margins in the restaurant industry, I would like to remind everyone of my bête noir, which is parking minimums for bars and restaurants. Off street parking mandates for places that serve alcohol are basically a subsidy to drunk driving.

Whether it's conservatives assassinating State Senators in Minnesota or liberals refusing to sell Alan Dershowitz pierogis in Martha's Vineyard, both sides have taken incivility to an extreme.
