YeonSoo is student at Purdue university and was detained by ICE after her visa interview at federal immigration court.
This is wrong!

According to my friend and divinity school classmate Bishop Matthew Heyd of the Episcopal Diocese of New York, Yeonsoo Go, daughter of an Episcopal priest, is being detained at a facility with no beds or showers or hot food. ⚓️

Having a good time in New Orleans atm, but three different bartenders have told me that this is the worst non-COVID summer they've ever seen—one of whom has worked in the French Quarter for *forty years*.

The road ahead
The city's first capital improvement plan will be focused exclusively on projects related to the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It's already being referred to as the "Games CIP"
I wrote about LA's transportation budget issues back in March. Over the next few years, Angelenos get to watch as safety improvements will be prioritized around megaevent venues.
While we wait 5? 10? 16? years for basic fixes that will get our kids to school alive

In 2019, LADOT held this demonstration to show how a safer intersection would work along this busy bike corridor. The safe routes to schools program brought in lots of grant funding to make these streets safer.
Why doesn't LADOT get to spend that money on simple solutions that we know will work?

Boston’s Big Dig, rerouting a whole-ass interstate? 22 years. One roundabout in LA? 16 years if you’re lucky.

It took Seattle around 15 years to demolish the Alaskan Way freeway, replace it with an underground tunnel, and create a new pedestrian waterfront. LA is looking at 16 years to maybe put in one roundabout.

This intersection has been approved for safety improvements which were first proposed in 2011 (!) and funded in 2019.
But because the people who put together the budget for the city do not prioritize saving the lives of our kids, these improvements are not scheduled to be completed until 2027

In 2019, I was picking up my son from preschool when I learned Alessa Fajardo had been killed by a driver in Ktown. Alessa was 4. My son was 4.
On Thursday, I was planning a crosswalk when I learned Nadir Gavarrete had been killed by a driver in Ktown. Nadir was 9. My son is 9.

Angelanos have to illegally paint their own crosswalks because the state and local Departments of Transportation are perfectly content with killing people. If you asked them right now, the DOT would say this intersection is functioning as intended — meaning its intended function includes killing you

Before and after photos of an intersection: Top photo shows the intersection without any painted crosswalks. Bottom photo shows the intersection with four painted crosswalks. Both photos show a tribute of candles, flowers, and children's toys marking the corner where 9-year-old Nadir Gavarrete died.
Three days ago 9-year-old Nadir Gavarrete and his brother were hit by a driver at 4th & New Hampshire in Ktown. Nadir died and his brother is hospitalized. LA city officials are well aware of the dangers of this intersection and have done nothing.

3 things that are proven to make society better
1) running frequent bus service
2) helping people get stable housing that they consent to living in
3) giving people some consistent amount of money each month
1 thing proven to harm society: drastic wealth inequality

Since people are talking about the razor thin margins in the restaurant industry, I would like to remind everyone of my bête noir, which is parking minimums for bars and restaurants. Off street parking mandates for places that serve alcohol are basically a subsidy to drunk driving.
