Lewis was criticised in the newsroom last month for not offering words of public support after a reporterโ€™s home was searched by FBI agents, which was seen as a further escalation of President Donald Trumpโ€™s attacks on the media. โ€œWeโ€™re under siege from the FBI and the Pentagon and he just walled himself off,โ€ the person said.ย

The sense that Lewis had lost the newsroom only increased on the day the job cuts were announced. โ€œThere was no communication from him about buyouts,โ€ the person added. โ€œHe didnโ€™t put out a statement. Senior editorial leadership was furious.โ€

I just learned from the DC Register that on Dec. 16 the Council adopted two competing ceremonial resolutions congratulating the Coolidge Colts on winning the Turkey Bowl game. The resolutions were introduced by the two councilmembers who are competing to be mayor.

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientistโ€”because the person felt she did didnโ€™t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

This video is outrageous but not because of Trumpโ€”itโ€™s because of the audience.

At a *prayer breakfast,* he says he believes (falsely) that he won the 2020 election because losing would harm his self esteem (which is true).

The audience applauds. They must have all gone mad.

Important paper. Schools are high-risk environments for respiratory disease transmission MAINLY because classrooms are underventilated. This problem has a workable solution - it just needs political will. Air quality is as important as water quality for public health. MT @martinmckee.bsky.social

Dang now Iโ€™ve gone and looked it up: it was D.C. v. Washington Home Ownership Council, Inc., 415 A.2d 1349 (D.C. 1980). The case was heard en banc and it was a 5-3 decision.

Iโ€™m surprised it was that close.

Exactly the loophole that the court foreclosed.

The remaining loophole is for โ€œcongressional review emergenciesโ€ where the temporary billโ€™s 30-congressional-day review period outlasts the 90-calendar-day emergency bill. That loophole only works because the emergency circumstances are different.

Council canโ€™t pass successive 90-day emergency bills based on the same emergency circumstances. I donโ€™t recall the court case offhand, but it interprets โ€œnot to exceed 90 daysโ€ in this Home Rule Act section. code.dccouncil.gov/us/dc/counci...

President Trump now says it was Attorney General Pam Bondi who insisted DNI Tulsi Gabbard attend the FBI raid in Georgia. Last night, he told NBC he didn't know why she was there. And Gabbard said in a letter to Congress that "the president specifically directed my observance of the execution of the Fulton County search warrant."

I want to reiterate that this shit is nuts. A federal invasion of state-run elections, an intelligence community invasion of federal law enforcement, a White House invasion of a criminal investigation, and a presidentโ€™s insane treasonable sore loser obsession all rolled up and muddled together.

In appreciation: Erica Carlsson, formerly of DPR and DOEE, for her environmental stewardship and community-supporting work | Forest Hills Connection | News and Life in Our DC Neighborhood Forest Hills Connection | News and Life in Our DC Neighborhood

Sometimes we like to say "thank you" to the public servants who work to make our neighborhood a better place to live. Our latest article is about Erica Carlsson, formerly of DPR and DOEE, for her work supporting the community's efforts to protect the environment.

Certainly it had diminished by 2024, but Iโ€™d argue it was still the most important endorsement.

And many people vote for mayor without researching the candidates for state board of education or even at-large councilmember. The Post endorsement was a true information shortcut in down-ballot races.

My story on Elon Musk cutting safeguards at xAI is on the front page of today's @washingtonpost.com. Iโ€™m also among 100โ€™s of reporters laid off. I absolutely loved my job my brilliant coworkers & the thrill of reporting @ the center of forces upending the world: AI & Silicon Valleyโ€™s political power

An interesting fact: D.C. has already received 18,000 individual tax returns and 300 corporate returns. The Republican resolution repealing the city's tax law passed the House today, and if it passes the Senate and is signed by the president, many of those returns will have to be redone.

Hmm. In the last cycle, a candidate re-used the name of a committee from a prior race. And OCF decided (belatedly) that the candidate couldnโ€™t do that. OCF required them to refund all the new contributions and re-solicit all those donors with the new committeeโ€™s name

How misguided visionaries and negligent owners threaten journalism at CBS News and The Washington Post At a time when the public needs strong, trustworthy journalism more than ever, why do strategies unfolding at CBS News and The Washington Post seem to undermine their work more than uplift it?

Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos says nothing as 1/3 of paper's staff is laid off. CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss says nothing after a newly hired contributor appears in over 1,700 documents related to Jeffrey Epstein. Read this on how terrible leaders are destroying journalism. loom.ly/f_FqSFk

The Post Metro archive is incredible. I used to have a trove of politics articles from the 80s and 90sโ€”often 2000 or 4000 words, or even a tiny blurb reporting a little developmentโ€”thanks to the best $25 I ever spent

I grew up in the Maryland suburbs of DC; the WaPo arrived at our house every morning, and I read it from the time I was in elementary school. The destruction of an institution with such a storied history by its dilettante owner is a true shame.
