Northwestern Cutting 425 Jobs
Northwestern University is eliminating 425ย jobsโabout half of which are currently vacantโas it navigates a funding freeze imposed by the Trump administration, The Chicago Tribune reported.
Northwestern plans to lay off over 400 people as a result of Trump's cuts to research and funding freezes. I'll repeat my assessment of the net effects of Trump's policies: *US higher ed will be smaller, poorer, and capable of doing fewer things*

How Trump Defunded the Higher-Education Police
The U.S. Department of Education used to employ people whose job was to stop waste, fraud, and abuse. Now, almost all of their desks are empty.
"At the beginning of this year, ED employed about 220 people to make sure that money actually went toward paying for students to attend legitimate educational institutions. But no such investigations are being conducted today." Read @kevincarey1.bsky.social: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

For what it's worth, this is precisely the reason the Klan wore hoods when they terrorized communities and disappeared unfavored minorities.
Historically, it wasn't called doxxing it was just recognizing a fascist community member.

Exclusive | Delayed Meeting at a Powerful College Panel Stirs Suspicions in Higher Ed
The Trump administration postponed a summer meeting for a panel set to vote on reapproving Columbia Universityโs accreditor.
4/ The dept's move may be more about putting pressure on the accreditor, giving some pretext to threaten Middle States' (and now NECHE's) recognition.
As the WSJ reported, the dept has moved a meeting of an accreditation advisory panel to October, instead of July -

The Nuclear Club Might Soon Double
As American power recedes, South Korea, Japan, and a host of other countries may pursue the bomb.
๐งต Earlier this year, I traveled to East Asia for a story about whether South Korea and Japan will pursue nuclear weapons as China continues its nuclear build-up and the U.S. becomes a (much) less reliable ally.

The Rev William Barberโs โmoral movementโ confronts Trumpโs America. Can it work?
In weekly nonviolent protests that channel the civil rights tradition, the faithful rally to end poverty and injustice
โBearing moral witness matters even when it doesnโt automatically produce results, because failing to show up at all cedes ground unnecessarily. โA moral fight is one that you have to engage, because not to engage is to risk damage that might not be reversibleโโ
