And if your reaction is "But racist white people will just blurt out crazy racist shit without warning when they're alone with only white people... My sibling in Poast, that *is* the feeling out. They will say way crazier and way more racist shit if you signal it's ok.

Very much in the same way that racist white people feel out whether they can say racist shit when there's no PoC present.

I've had that happen, the feeling-out. Probably it's happened lots of times and I didn't pick up on it, but I noticed one recently with my neighbor trying to see if I'd participate in a "I hate it when my wife nags me" session and I shut it down.

Like I don't need a lecture on why abortion rights matter, I need to know more details about the nasty law Kentucky or wherever is proposing.

I remember her at Slate. I used to get annoyed because I was interested in the topics she covered, I generally agreed with her points, and she spent half the article lecturing me about things I already agree with instead of, you know, reporting the story!

Brad Pitt's character at the end of Inglourious Basterds saying "Nah, I don't think so. More like chewed out. I've been chewed out before." It's right after he had his lieutenant shoot a captive Nazi and right before the two of them carve a swastika into Co. Hans Landa's forehead so people can always identify him wherever he goes.

He's got a great topic for his college application essays, though.

The question is "how resilient is Chinese infrastructure if it turns out they can't reliably prevent USAF bombing raids" and I think the answer is pretty dismal.

I wonder how fast China could, if they wanted to. But also, the USA could do that in 1942 because the mainland wasn't getting bombed. One way a US-China conflict goes includes a near-total destruction of Chinese electric infrastructure in the first month.

It's quite possible that all China's ports would come to a dead stop. And uh, I'm not sure what that does to the "China has half the world's industrial capacity" theory of Chinese military dominance.

In the carrier alone. And the carrier group also likely takes casualties.

Flip side, with Guam, Japan, and maybe even South Korea to operate from, the US fast attack submarines probably have the biggest successes since the German U-Boats in WWII.

And the San Francisco Opera used a large delivered battery to power their traveling outdoor Boheme Out of the Box show the last couple years. Nice not to have the generator running during the Opera!

It's already becoming a standard for van-life types. It's such a convenient and widely-available form factor.

Doing special pleading for the left - "Oh, it's a tactical maneuver" or "Oh, the Democrats should have to win their voters" - this is ridiculous. The country is on fire, don't give air cover to the people refusing to help put it out until they're treated like very special little boys and girls.

There's a *lot* of cabinet posts, and leaving aside that there's no reason a person who happens to be trans couldn't be, say, Secretary of the Interior, I think there's a good case for Health and Human Services in particular right now.

No, no, don't let them hear that.

If I hadn't been paying attention to Bill Kristol for the last nine years but had for the twenty before that, I would think he meant it that way.

The problem is 2:1 isn't much good when we need to be able to count on all 50-ish Senators. 16 failures out of that number is catastrophic. Look what damage just two (Manchin and Sinema) did.

If I were a Mainerv I'd vote against Collins and hope to primary him next time.

Can she do both under New York law? Run in both elections at the same time?

It's not just a matter of having six people a day to rotate through their speeches. Everyone's gotta be on their toes. Which isn't to say they shouldn't do it...

15.02.2026 00:33 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

They can rotate the actual speakers, but the whole party has to be nearby in case there's a cloture vote. Or, of course, if too many Republicans wind up too far from the floor and they can try to call a snap vote to reject the bill.

"Star wars names" is also their "code" for people with names suggesting an ethnicity they don't like. It wouldn't surprise me if it's become broader than that.

Not in the Democratic primary. I don't think it's an asset in the general but it may not weigh her down much either.

Besides, foreign policy is never a very big factor in presidential elections. You gotta fuck up BIG (e.g. W. in Iraq) for it to matter.

If you could break that social lock, I think you might find that as many as one in three are pro-choice. Still a minority, but if Republicans lost a third of white Christian Evangelicals, they'd be toast in American politics. They have to win virtually all.

14.02.2026 19:34 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 7    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

For example, if you poll Evangelical Christians, you'll find that as many as 1 in 5 are pro-choice. If you ask them about that in public, you'll find that visually zero is. That's because they know it's socially unacceptable to say that within their community.
