For the SMS Power coding competition I'm making a special screen for Razing Core that is accessible in the game and as a separate ROM for the competition.
The deadline is March 27th and I encourage you to enter! You can also make a hack or a music entry. #homebrew #mastersystem

Starseed DX update:👾
- Rewrote the Projectile and Sprite collision code tonight for BIG wins. There's a LOT happening nice and smoothly now on the little Game Boy.
Here's a little video of things zipping about💨

I love the counter-scrolling chain in the background.
Are you performing any kind of collision filtering?

For sure! Even when you have no limits it helps to impose them on yourself.
25.01.2026 19:47 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
The flip side is sometimes finding myself trying to optimise something that already works well. It was fun though, so I guess there was some point?

Whenever I used an engine it felt like I was being less thoughtful about the design. I was dropping in an effect or mechanic without taking the time to understand why it should be in my game.
If you have to implement it yourself you think about it more, and also go off on interesting tangents.

If you've made retro games for PC and then moved to a retro system you realise how relatively few resources you have (CPU time, memory etc).
The upside though is that you tend to think more deeply about everything you add to the game, which can improve the design.

Now that most of the main parts of Razing Core are in place I'm able to go back and upgrade some things where possible.
Today I've been improving visibility in game with some brighter and bigger fonts, bigger powerups, and darker backgrounds.

Guardic Gaiden (1988): A surreal biomechanical fantasy illustration of a female humanoid figure fused with intricate metallic machinery, seated atop a towering cylindrical structure composed of silver pipes, tubes, gears, pistons, and mechanical limbs. She has pale skin, long dark hair, a serene expression, and wears minimal metallic armor plating integrated into her body. Numerous flexible hoses and cables extend from her head like a crown of tentacles, connecting to surrounding robotic appendages, large gun barrels, blades, and circular mechanical components. The background features a dramatic fiery orange and red volcanic landscape with glowing lava flows, jagged mountains, and dark smoky skies.
Guardic Gaiden (1988) by Compile for Nintendo Famicom. The international title is The Guardian Legend and the printed Japanese box subtitle reads Legend of Goardic. Illustrated by Naoyuki Kato.

I spent some time today refactoring the difficulty levels in Razing Core.
If the difficulty range is too great it can damage the flow of a stage at certain levels. I know how I want the game to feel but I also want to provide enough difficulty options.

I'm currently developing games for the SEGA Master System. I like to use pastel or dark backgrounds with bright and bold foreground sprites.

Dev update: the game is around 60% complete and should be released in the next 6 months.
Following the addition of destructible items I'm also thinking about adding a 3 minute caravan/score attack stage, but we'll see closer to the end.

Title Screen for my game Torasu. It shows various menu options
Screenshot from my game. It shows various enemies littering the screen. A portrait of the pilot is on the bottom right
A Space Harrier style golden dragon boss from my game
A bunch of space hamsters cover the screen in patterns with the player ship has to dodge while picking up bonus points. It is one of the two bonus stages in the demo
Torasu Demo v1.1 [Windows] now available!
This is a love letter to the NES version of Gyruss sprinkled with various other influences. Check it out if you're into #shmups :D
Featuring music made in Deflemask & FamiTracker

The manual scaling looks really nice, much better than using the fine scaling of an engine or whatever.
For the regions, could you just check the centre point of the boss? That way you could remove your "beef" checks as it can only be in one region. You might need to make the regions touch too.

A diagram illustrating the effect of perception of colours when placed beside different colours.
The SMS only has two true grey colours but you can use a neat trick.
Here I use a midtone brown, which when placed alongside other bright reds appears grey.
Also notice dark grey appears green when placed in red, as green is opposite to red on the RYB colour wheel.
