I think it might be a shortened version of “monster”, and it is very negative, unlike the “cheerful” German meaning.

I’m vaccinated & live with OH & was fine.

Some adults born overseas missed UK vaccinations. This includes older adults, for example those born in European communist countries such as Poland in the early 1970’s (no vaccine) or 1975-1980’s (only one jab instead of two).
NHS provides vaccines on request but some adults unaware of vac status.
