My graphics programmer seems to think the tradeoffs are barely worth it for URP. We get some nice features, but at a pretty significant performance cost, and the complexity isn't really enabling much more for the same effort level. *Maybe* different on mobile or with a full team of engineers?

how do we not live in a world where a bunch of the people who made Titanfall can't just push out a quick, solid mid-budget campaign shooter to prove themselves and build up a runway / reputation? How do we jump immediately to "We need to compete with Apex"?

This is... unfortunately probably related to people in game discords hating on the game. But also developers are "bad" if they remove negative criticism. Some people only know how to interact with faceless Brandsโ„ข now, and not like actual people because the brands run their lives.

Vibe Coding Is Killing Open Source Software, Researchers Argue โ€˜If the maintainers of small projects give up, who will produce the next Linux?โ€™

Vibe coding is working as expected: it'll kill the open-source, secure, and ideologically maintained alternatives to make sure you have to pay the oligarchs to do anything at all, and they can control what you're allowed to make.

There's probably also just other pro social and community building things that would be much more speculative and higher investment, and maybe just wouldn't work out because the ingrained community now too highly values competition as a core goal. Hard to say.

I think taking away comms actually *increases* toxicity, but lowers impact of that toxicity. IMO you want to foster positive communication rather than reduce dependence on communication.

..make supports less negatively impactful when they're getting ganked and killed repeatedly. Carries still carry, but supports role is less about *not* getting killed and more about having positive impacts with warding, teamfight centric abilities, etc

MANY thoughts: store.steampowered.com/news/app/227...

More specifically, I think Mobas can be a bit tricky because they tend to amplify your worst players. And you have to design specifically against it. I think Dota has been really quietly working that way over a decade to...

You might like a blog post I wrote up a couple months back. More the back of it on how toxicity IS a game design problem as much as a social one. store.steampowered.com/news/app/227...

27.01.2026 23:34 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

And as a result that means PvP is NOT an impossible mutli genre field of toxicity. You just have to *do game design* to work in that space. I think you see a lot of stuff in say, hero shooters, that looks pro team building but is actually just toxicity building. Because they ignored social design.

27.01.2026 23:33 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

I'd take it further. Game design is ALSO a product of community design. Who you attract and how they behave influence your product as well. Both in prerelease feedback and reaction and for most modern and multiplayer games, in the continued development after release. Community design IS game design.

I think the absolute funniest fast travel was Mirror's Edge Catalyst. A series turned open world game to make traveling around with free running really fun. Its most fun missions unlock the fast travel points. You should NEVER use the fast travel points if you want to enjoy the game.

Sourcetree is passable. It doesn't wrap every git feature super well though, so I find myself in the command line a little more than I would like (when I screw something up usually, which is when I would want my visual tools to actually help me :P)

I absolutely want a Star Trek JAG show. Just imagine the kinds of legal drama and hijinx you get into when you're a rapidly expanding federation of hundreds of member states each with their own rich history of law and precedent. There's no way that place isn't a total mess.

*Almost* all feedback is useful while making games, even "this sucks" at least tells you someone didn't have fun.

The exception: Someone telling you how they think *other* people will react to your game. They're usually wrong, and just masking their own feelings in a difficult to unpack way.
