Radicals who continue to train at commercial martial arts gyms with chuds often like training with chuds because despite it all, the people in those gyms will push you and pull something out of you you didn't know you had. They often go to extremes, but there's still a belief you're capable of more, that you have untapped agency. Whereas in radical spaces, there's often the opposite extreme and that thinking people are capable of more is harmful, being able to do more is a privilege. There's a cognitive dissonance that these radicals who train with chuds often avoid confronting: wanting comfort while simultaneously experiencing the benefit of discomfort. If they actually followed their own advice or demands, they would have missed out on all that personal growth in the gym. They're living positive experiences their own demands would have denied. So now what? How helpful was their own advice for themselves? If their own advice was absolutely true, they would have quit their commercial gyms that do everything the opposite. (And many HAVE left. Some found an alternative approach like LMA). Yet they stay because they feel a benefit, they have fun, they LIKE IT. They hate to admit it out loud, but they often get along better with chud teammates than people in their own radical spaces. This contradiction seems similar to the phenomenon of parents who, in trying to oppose reactionary authoritarian parenting, run straight toward reactionary helicopter parenting. Maybe the real pain is recognizing that your radical beliefs aren't as radical as you thought. In trying to avoid being controlled, you're trying to control everything.
