for those who don't follow it, "chat control" is the idea that, since encrypted messaging can't be spied on / monitored, that your actual phone should scan everything you write or send before you send it www.eff.org/deeplinks/20...

24.09.2025 16:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 1I have never in my life covered an FCC official that gives less of a fuck about the public interest
even first term FCC boss Ajit Pai, who was a complete revolving door hack, believed this sort of censorship crossed a line
Losing my ever-loving-mind watching the same people who were just clutching their pearls claiming censorship over mean emails from WH staffers to Twitter about COVID misinfo are now HAVING THE FCC CHAIR openly threaten broadcast licenses over a joke about the president AND THE BROADCASTERS CENSOR IT

07.09.2025 18:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1Imo, ppl have barely started talking about it and wrestling with it, and IETF draft is still in flux, tho at "last call" phase. Publishers are making a concerted effort to turn this into DRM for the Web, though the previous "AI use" (inference) has been parked. See also: github.com/ietf-wg-aipr...

06.09.2025 19:38 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0This letter is important. It is a careful, detailed, scholarly, and accurate explanation of the elements of the DSA and EU law that prevent the DSA from being a "censorship" law in the first place. 03.09.2025 15:05 β π 64 π 24 π¬ 2 π 1The linked headline's "unexpected" is ridiculous. Every person who worked in this space (specifically, not legislators) said, correctly, that this would happen. It should be replaced with "predicted" or "standard" or "obvious." This is not an untried policy! See also FOSTA/SESTA.

27.08.2025 14:08 β π 6 π 5 π¬ 1 π 0yeah, fair distinction, but buildings (and power and cooling etc) don't seem trivial. If "compute" needs generally continue to grow, it will all be productively used. That said (and to your pt) - we may come up with better data centers in future, but prob not faster-than-light data transmission!
21.08.2025 18:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0also: doesn't a lot turn on how customized the data center builds are? That is, data center companies get acquired & get integrated into 3rd party's systems - why wouldn't that be the case here? Less of a standardized/generic asset like dark fiber, but seems a lot can be re-used.

19.08.2025 16:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Today, itβs interesting to think about how licensing systems for AI training data and outputs might be gamed in the same way, and I wish I could debate with Ernest about it like old times.
