It's funny if DOJ is arguing for clear identification of who's a journalist/religious leader when U.S. federal government agents are often masked and not wearing clear identification of their identity or even affiliation.

I have a guess that it's roughly the same as the number of people policing Hatch Act violations by senior members of the administration.

One concern: they only really need access to information in the IRS system once. If they integrate it all into other systems it'll be impossible to remove even if a court later rules that accessing the information was wrong.

This is dark. I’m gonna say it: I do my think SCOTUS will ratify nationalization of guard troops over a governor’s objections on a transparently insane and nonsensical premise. I think they try to avoid it if possible.

I think that some of the "dumber" part is because politicians (especially republicans) intentionally misinform them. They deal all the time with complaints and requests from constituents and businesses, so they know that our immigration system is a mess, but they insist constantly that it's easy.

if you ask the average American to describe what they think a tougher immigration system should look like, they will describe something a degree of magnitude softer and more generous than the current reality.

The lesson here is that people are both better and dumber than they appear.
