1/ Instagram post from prof_carl: We had to cancel our Arizona Trail thru hike because my girlfriend was denied entry into the US. This is a long read, but I believe it’s important to tell this story. After a nasty, unfair encounter with US Customs, we are both back in Canada.

2/ I’m supposed to be waking up on the desert floor next to my favourite person in the midst of my favourite activity right now. Instead, I’ve just returned to Canada after an absolute nightmare of an experience. I’ll start by saying, I’m okay and safe, and Natasha is okay and safe. I’ve waited a few days to share about our (mostly her) experience because 1) I’ve felt so hurt, and frustrated, and defeated I haven’t wanted to do anything but dissociate from this wild reality and 2) I did not feel safe to try to speak about our experience at all before attempting to cross the border again myself, for fear that doing so might put myself or loved ones in danger.

3/ But I believe it is important that this story be shared and so now that I am safe with my partner in Canada again, here’s what happened. Tuesday morning, Natasha had a flight down from Canada to Phoenix, and I had one from Huntsville to Phoenix. Our Birthday presents from my family last/this year were premium tickets to a Golden State Warriors vs Phoenix Suns basketball game that same night. I was stoked to get to watch Steph (my favourite player since the Davidson March Madness run) drain some 3s and then wake up the next morning and catch a ride from a friend to the southern terminus to begin our hike.

4/ Instead, when going through customs as normal in the airport that morning, Natasha was asked to head to another room for additional screening. The customs agent didn’t like that Natasha was only bringing a few items with her into the states. This was a strategic move for us: I had both of our layouts of gear at my family’s place. I would be flying with both our loaded packs so that Natasha wouldn’t have to check a bag or bring anything she wouldn’t want to carry on her back for the next 5 weeks. She arrived nearly 3 hours early for her flight. Customs into the u.s. are notoriously taking extra long right now, and she wanted to give herself plenty of time.
