Canada Post says another bailout needed as it continues to bleed cash Canada Post reported the highest quarterly loss in its history Friday, as the beleaguered mail service contends with stiff competition for parcel delivery and disruptions from an ongoing labour disput...

You know, I think I could live with getting mail once or twice a week, if some of that money was redirected to healthcare and education.

But if it goes towards Doug’s Skills Development petty cash box or Danielle’s pipelines in all directions, I’m out.

β€œIf the shelter isn’t being used, yet the city continues to operate it at significant taxpayer cost each week, it should now be clear to everyone that this is part of an enforcement strategy β€” not a genuine or meaningful solution,”

The first posting is from Alex Bierk about making city council motions regarding how the city is dealing with the encampments and shelters for people without housing. The second post is a link to a Peterborough Examiner article about 'affordable' rentals under $1800 per month.

@bsky.app nails juxtaposition. (That 'affordable' one-bedroom is $1395 per month.)

I've spent most of today working on another story: the city's second encampment sweep in a week

Temporary homeless shelter opened at former north end Peterborough fire hall had no visitors in first five days 40-bed shelter, operated by Brock Mission, opened Aug. 25 and could remain open for up to 90 days.

This was never meant to provide shelter, it's to justify the further disenfranchisement of some of the most vulnerable in our community through enforcement and evictions. Councillors are not being consulted and costs for enforcement are unknown to date. A report should be public later this month.

A person in a mobility scooter rolling next to a person walking on the sidewalk, two people ahead running.

Mobility lanes move more than just people on bikes and they often create much needed space that our minimal sidewalks lack.

It's as if the shelter were planned by someone with their own house and car, not by someone who would have to walk 5 km (carrying their belongings) away from their friends and amenities and services to an isolated room of uncomfortable camp cots.

β€˜I hope that my story can make a difference’: Palestinian student admitted to Trent outlines life in northern Gaza Waseem, 24, finds himself stranded in northern Gaza while awaiting word on if he will be able to come to Peterborough.

Helping to bring Waseem's story to light is probably the most important work I have ever done and I share his hope that it will make a difference.

I saw this one-person play at The Theatre on King: it's one of the best I've seen in my life. While this bibliophile was hoping it would be turned into a book, the film is going to be brilliant!

Family dinner at Zeytoon's. I justify eating there so often because it's supporting a local small business... right? Nothing to do with my saffron rice obsession.

No. Absolutely not.

We can't afford a $50+ million arena. There's homelessness on every street. I'm tired of the excuses from council. We can't afford a luxury like this when so many are struggling for the essentials. How much burden will council put on taxpayers to afford such vapid luxuries?

Ontario needs to decide if our criminal-justice system is effective or not. We can't incarcerate people and then never let them back into society. This ostracism leads to mental health issues and more crime.

"It’s β€œan equitable application of policies to all,” said Clark in an emailed statement.'

No, it's *equal*. If an individual can dump trash on the charities so the individual doesn't have to pay fees, it's not equitable.

Why are we calling these 'affordable'? If someone is making minimum wage, these rents leave money for anything but the very basic necessities--with no emergencies. It seems the term 'affordable' has been defined by people with a lot of disposable income.

Content warnings have been proven ineffective, and some studies suggest they increase trauma through anticipation. I think there are better ways of helping people deal with harm that has been done to them.

What if, rather than deciding who is deserving of basic rights in this city, we just ensured everyone has them. That, I'm sure, would make for a much more efficient meeting.
