Re graves at residential schools: my wife attended a religious boarding school founded in the 1700s, which also has a house of worship on its property, and the number of students buried there in unmarked graves is zero. So miss me with the “oh it was an earlier time, kids just died” business.

Vegan cream cheese is so hard. If you have access to store-made versions, I’ve found Violife brand pretty good, but I don’t like sweet cream cheese so can’t say if it would work for those applications. I’m trying to think about how to adapt a vegan buttercream icing to be more “cream cheese”-y…

No, I guess I had one gendered expectation: when I thought i had two sons I didn’t want them to grow up to be shitty white men. But really transition helped with that one.

I also don’t understand having such gendered expectations/hopes/dreams for your kid that them transitioning destroys them? My kids are different than my expectations and sometimes I have feelings about that, but none of it is about gender because, well, I don’t think gender works like that!

This is so inconceivable to me - there’s nothing to mourn! My kid is still RIGHT HERE. (And maybe I’m oversensitive b/c both my parents and my in-laws had children who died, but - like, the difference between “my kid is different than I thought” and “I have to put them in the ground” is like. Big.)

(More seriously, as an immigrant to Canada who has wrestled with more than a little internalized-and-externalized ableism in her life finding out Canada had an national hero who was an amputee who, like me, had bone cancer in his lower leg, has been...some combo of disconcerting and mindblowing.)
