It’s really hard for Ren to stay mad…especially when Blake’s so good at thinking up punishments for himself

Hale’s mom was a pilot doing an illegal job. Her ship was lost, & he can easily picture her stuck in it as it lost power & she suffocated in the dark void of space, no hope someone would find her. Or that it breached & she died in the vacuum.

Of course, Lilia’s most important relationship is her twin brother, Nico. This is the crux of the book, figuring out what to do with him now that he’s a (potentially dangerous) skeleton & saving him when a necromancer takes him

Lilia’s family is loving & important. Her parents both sacrificed to bring her brother back & give him a normal life. Her dad’s locked up for his part (we find out that it did lead him to be a less than savory witch later)

Hale never knew his dad. Like he’s not even a person he thinks about.

He remembers his mom, though she died when he was young. Her death is the cause of his star phobia

Max is his family, he figures by the end.

Sunny’s parents are ok, but a little overbearing

Jack’s dad is cruel to his son & abuses him. He’s salty he didn’t get to compete to be Mother Nature & his defective son does

His mom’s busy keeping her daughter dressed like a doll to protect her son (she has no power to overrule Jack, Sr. anyway)

Ren was close with his parents, especially his dad, whose auto service shop he was going to work in after graduation. When he died, his parents moved away from the heartbreak before he got the hang of being a ghost & could ask Shannon to visit.

Blake’s parents are loving, but his dad doesn’t like the occult. As the series goes on, they grow more involved with the story. Mary learns of Ren & her son’s a “wizard” in book 2. Toby reveals why he hates the occult & gives key info to the teens in book 3

Ace/Apollo’s mom was awful, verbally abusive & putting too much pressure on him to become a star.

His dad was neglectful, focusing on his work instead of his son. Ace’s second most important goal is winning his dad’s love (as a dad, not a brainwashed colleague)

Evie is daddy’s little girl. He doesn’t have much screen time, but he dotes on her when he does

Her mom is a public defender…& head of the non-aligned super group. In b1, we just think she’s hard on Evie, but in fact, she suspects there’s a problem & is trying to keep her safe

Your brain says, "do this" and your body goes "nah".

The slap triggers a fight response and maybe adrenaline, which can push past... sometimes.

First glance, the cybernetic arm isn’t obvious. He feels like it is, but one has to study the “skin” or touch it to determine that it’s not real. Or catch him opening a compartment or doing a scan or whatever.

Ren’s glow is a white light

Thanks to shapeshifting, Evie often heals away wounds…but not always. When she loses her powers, she’s basically “new,” though she keeps the broken ankle Ace gave them until it heals

Evie's ability to change her shape (in b1&3) is her most important feature. In b2, Ace waxes poetic about her skin and how soft it is (because it's basically brand-new)

Ace's white-blond hair is the feature I most love to describe, & one of his favorite things. BigBad takes a knife & mangles it as part of his torture because he knows it'll hurt him so much

Of course, Ace's smile is also quite important, and something he's always thinking about
