Y'know, sometimes I wonder if the stories I write are too boring, and then I have to remind myself that I'm writing character-centric stories, and by definition, those stories are gonna be quieter. Doesn't really stop me from wondering, but oh well, lmao~

Agreed. I don't even like Hazbin (violently Not My Flavor) but a lotta people seem really incapable of being normal about it. Nostalgia Critic, Cinema Sins, and (to a relatively smaller extent) Game Theory did so much harm to media literacy and critical analysis online.

Also also, there is a spectrum to this like everything, so it's important to look at what it's fundamentally doing as a story. If it's inviting you to imagine another/different way of being in order to see a mirror held up to the soul? Probably Speculative Fiction.

Also keep in mind there is a difference between "grounded" and "realism." Plenty of speculative is plenty grounded, but its central pillar is not "nuts and bolts."

Not everything in Speculative fiction has to be unrealistic, but the central idea ("a world where people are generally androgynous except for once a month when they spontaneously develop a sex at random") is outside the realm of "realistic" and often is how world and theme are tied to one another.
