the truth nuke is that westmoreland was not as much of a relative moron as orthodox histories make him out to be. instead, every other commander in vietnam was just as stupid and short-sighted as he was, and they tried to use him as a scapegoat for their collective failures

okay idk how much you know about vietnam (im vietnamese) but for as conservative as PAVN is, PubSec is infinitely worse, they are like, extremely anti democracy and engineered the enormous online crackdowns of the 2010s and 20s and are pretty intent on destroying what little remains

I do think some of the analysis here is a bit American-centric, with an inability to understand why a Vietnam which has just seen *gestures wildly at the last year* is still cautious about American intentions. Vietnamese leadership has always been very cautious in their foreign policy

To Lam has been installing personal loyalists in key regional party positions, combining ministries to centralize control, hardcore cracked down on dissent, in the recent NC opened the way for combination of all top positions, and also installed Nguyen Tan Dungโ€™s evil-ass kids and proteges

03.02.2026 16:35 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 11    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

theyre less authoritarian than the current leadership, which is centralizing around the Ministry of Public Security in a very Xi-style way, eschewing the collective leadership model

03.02.2026 16:33 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 3    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

do note that these โ€œcommunist hardlinersโ€ in PAVN are by far the good guys here, theyโ€™re way less authoritarian than the current leader, To Lam of public security fame

not how the PLA functions at all, this is really quite racist to use the โ€œasiatic hordesโ€ myth. Despite the PLAโ€™s corruption they have been making both major leaps in anti-corruption and military efficacy, as this work lays out

the diplomatic balancing act theyve done with the prc also shows a pretty high amount of diplomatic savvy. obviously as a democratic socialist i am not a fan of their economic system at all but otherwise theyve done a pretty commendable job

sort of an idle thought i guess, but itโ€™s interesting when compared to japan or the philippines or even taiwan

definitely true of vietnamese (and asian) revolutionaries, ho chi minh never read kapital and was inspired by lenin, more than anyone else. still the GOAT though
