Someone else told me it’s just a difference between British vs American writing styles? I have not googled into this further, but it made sense, given many words have different spellings depending on the residence of the writer.

That’s fair! This was my first read from this author, and I didn’t realize there were different approaches for marking dialogue. I think that kinda make it a challenge for me, and the transitions felt awkward. I thought the idea/plot was there for sure tho!
