Now, I only spent 5-6 days in each city, so small sample size limitations apply, but this was my experience, YMMV. Also, there are so many other amazing spots to visit in Spain that aren't these two humongous cities and it's worth venturing out.

Both are beautiful cities with loads of history and great food, and neither is the wrong choice. For me, I felt more welcome in Madrid as a tourist, and safer overall. In Madrid it seemed easier to find good live music, which is important to me.
