a left liberalism of fear, which views the basic units of political society as the weak and the powerful, which views cruelty as the summum malum, which is suspicious of every utopian venture: this is the way

Letter: If Gov. Cox wants to lower the temperature, why did he vote for Trump? Letter: If Gov. Cox wants to lower the temperature, why did he vote for Trump?

A level of moral clarity we’ll need a lot more of in the coming years.

“Sir, my president hates me. Not just me, but a whole lot of Americans. And non-Americans. And you helped put him back in this role.”

Fun coda to the story, Bari Weiss is now head of CBS news and Radley Balko was fired from the WaPo mostly because he was such a good actual journalist on his beat

I don't think the word fascism should be thrown around or depreciated through overuse, but if your top advisers are going around calling for an autocratic executive to suspend the judiciary and declare martial law, the whole "don't call me a fascist" thing loses its punch.

Fortunately once SCOTUS says courts can't stop Trump from sending Texans to kill Oregonians the Democratic leadership will have some strong points about kitchen table issues

When a man sees the future without hope,
Whenever he endorses Hobbes' report
"The life of man is nasty, brutish, short,"
The dragon rises from his garden border
And promises to set up law and order.

Julius Streicher was a writer and publisher who had no personal involvement in the war or the Holocaust.

He was so responsible for incitement to genocide as a propogandist that he was tried, convicted, and hanged at Nuremberg for crimes against humanity.

also while I appreciate the change of heart on this issue, “there is nothing progressive about mercantilism” is a little silly. like we have a record of what happened since the 1980s and who in the coalition stood for free trade and who didn’t.

like it’s revisionist history NOT to admit that progressives wanted trade deals dead - they as much as MAGA - are responsible we don’t have TPP. like we don’t have to relitigate 2016 but let’s not pretend things didn’t happen.

agree with all of this. but let’s be fair and awknowledge also that we’ve been told for a decade now that “Bernie is the future” and on trade there’s very little difference between Trump and him and progressives had to be brought into the tent after 2020.

On the government shutdown, here's what you're not being told.
If Republican Senators wanted to pass the CR and reopen the government they could, by using the nuclear option to override the 60 vote rule and pass the CR with a simple majority vote. We have 53 R Senators.
This is what I have proposed all along, only I would like Congress to pass new Republican appropriation bills, instead of CRs, and use the nuclear option to pass them through the Senate.
This would deliver our campaign promises to the American people.

This would allow us to bring important appropriation funding (taxpayer dollars) back to our districts for much needed projects like infrastructure, water, law enforcement, and community needs, which by the way none of this funding happens under perpetual CRs.
The Senate just recently used the nuclear option to push through a large package of the President's nominees. They know how to do it.
And as far as worrying that using the nuclear option would damage partisan relations, let's be real, that ship has sailed a long time ago.
There are no partisan relations.
Instead, Republicans need to learn how to weld power when they have it and govern.

And all the cuts Russ Vought is making can be made in new Congressional Republican
Appropriation bills.
If Congress is never allowed or fails to pass new legislation and new appropriations (not CRs), then everything President Trump is doing will remain temporary.
Did you all really vote for a temporary president with temporary policies that can just be switched off with a Democrat election victory?
In order for policies you support to become law, Congress has to pass legislation and the President has to sign it into law.
By Congress handing over its power and responsibility to Russ Vought, nothing becomes permanent. It's all temporary.
You should be demanding Congress do its job that the Constitution requires.
Legislate!!!

one congressperson who takes their legislative responsibility seriously: MTG. I think this stems from her being a true MAGA believer who wants to plan for the day after.

there is a considerable contingent of folks online who just yearn for drama that no level of appeasement will ever satisfy. I’m not even discussing merits, it’s about sectarianism and purity. yea, go ahead and destroy one cultural space that is not contaminated by MAGA, see how that works out.

I wonder if this is a generational thing. A cohort of older millennials who came of age during the war on terror and for whom Fahrenheit 9/11 being released in 2004 and then Kerry still losing was THE determinative moment.
