A fake book cover, intended to look like an old pulp fantasy book. The title is The Beggeter's Trap. The cover shows a bearded man in a dark grimy room. Text on the cover says "A new chilling tale from the master of fantasy horror Cyril T. Dooglas" and a quote attributed to Daryl S. Forsythe which reads "Cyril T. Dooglas makes Harry F. Newman look like Peter B. Westen!". There is also a promotional notice saying "Win! 3 tickets to Pit Con '77 in Boise ID".

I've made a cover for my title for #AppxNJam title. Not sure if I'll get the whole thing done. I have a plan for a Tunnel Goons dungeon.

I dropped away from video games around the time this became a big thing, so primarily it has meant I can't fake a passable knowledge of the medium anymore 🤔

Here's a couple of interesting comments I found, criticizing the Age of Vikings RPG cover I made. I personally do not mind my works being criticized, everybody has right for their own taste and opinion, but I want to comment some things here.

I just picked this up. Now all I need to do is gather some cards, a Jenga tower, and a couple of hours to *have intense feelings* 👨‍🚀🤖

Adventures for Trophy Gold declare a "set goal" when reaching a new location. The GM tells the players what the goal is, but the characters don't necessarily know what it is. It could be "Identify which villager is a werewolf" when there has been no previous mention of werewolves.

In our #MythicBastionland game, we just discussed PC plans. A player tentatively suggested a visit to his home realm - "tentative" cos he worried it would trigger a bunch of prep for me BUT making realms is straightforward and fun, and since it is his home we might prep (non-secret) parts together.

There are ideas here that are familiar, just from experience in play, but it is really helpful to build up a vocabulary for talking about them and dealing with obstacles. Worth a watch!

Though I've not reflected on this enough to know whether it has been gradual or sudden. I suspect gradual.

From a GM perspective, I think I have experienced a shift from (1) I am drawing on familiar tools to run the session to (2) the session is just happening and the tools are less central. I think that shift is triggered by responding to other players' engagement.

The audio and visual aids set up by the folks at @questportal.bsky.social were great for establishing the feel of an isolated, vulnerable settlement.

In our one shot, our goði (leader of the community) sent us to a neighbouring homestead to find out why they've been out of touch and we ended up dealing with a curse on the land. It was very atmospheric and felt steeped in Icelandic folklore.

I played in an Age of Vikings one shot on a Tuesday. I really enjoy when games combine fantasy adventure and grounded domesticity. AoV has, for example, multiple interesting magic systems, but also has a lot of the historical concerns of medieval Icelandic life.

I've been playing #ttrpg for 15 years. I got the PDF of #MythicBastionland last year, and it has led to the best RPG experiences I've had.

But don't take my word for it: my mum (who has never read an RPG book before) flipped through it and said "Wow, this has everything you'd need to tell a story."

Great thread on tone and emotion in rpgs.
