And important to note that one big concession the D's got was ongoing funding of SNAP -- so when the Jan shutdown comes, people will be able to eat (or, to put it another way, the R's won't have their most important hostage).

@jamellebouie.net , this is exactly the point that George Orwell made in Politics and the English language, in a moment of Nazi and Soviet propaganda repeated by their British admirers - extremely relevant to today and illustrated with brutal examples. Maybe you could write about it?

We stand united against all 13 anti–DC Home Rule bills in Congress.

DC is home to more than 700,000 residents who pay taxes, run businesses, and serve in the military. Like all Americans, we deserve the right to set our own local laws.

Congress should reject this unprecedented federal overreach.

193. The "War" on Judges Deputy Attorney General Blanche's attack on lower courts is an impressive combination of light on substance; shamelessly hypocritical; and profoundly dangerous. More people should be condemning it.

There have been at least 154 cases in which federal district courts have issued preliminary relief against a Trump administration policy.

Those rulings have come from 121 *different* judges appointed by seven presidents (including 15 appointed by Trump) sitting in 29 district courts in 10 circuits:

While I usually agree with you, I don't here - whether it's a collapse (let alone an epic collapse) seems a matter of opinion/ political guesswork not known right now - so I think it's a plus if they aren't going immediately into political opinion & their favorite "Dems in disarray" story.

Judges order Trump administration to use emergency reserves for SNAP payments during the shutdown Two federal judge have ruled that the Trump administration must continue to fund the SNAP food aid program using emergency reserve funds during the government shutdown

Today, a court ruled that USDA acted unlawfully by completely suspending SNAP food assistance for November.

A separate court also ordered USDA to continue funding SNAP using its contingency funds.

No family should go hungry when the agency has billions in contingency funds for this very purpose.

Several of the wasteful and poorly targeted tax cuts in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will be replicated in the local tax code unless the DC Council approves this emergency bill, which would protect $658 billion in local funds that can be used to support residents in need.

Thx for answering. I'm a 35-yr resident, worked in DC and federal govt & nonprofits. It's a stressful time for us- parents forming human buses so children get to school safely past ICE, armed nat'l guard all around. So we want people outside to know who we are & speak for us.

Dear @lyndonbajohnson.bsky.social , I want to say on behalf of Washington DC: we're an amazing multi-racial city of 700.000 people who are responding courageously to military occupation.I can't believe you want to get rid of us - are you confusing us with our occupiers? That's playing their game.

The SNAP fight is actually a recapitulation of the entire purpose of the shutdown.
There's a contingency fund, Trump is required to spend it, but he's not, usurping Congress's power of the purse, essentially so he can do it again with normal appropriations whenever he wants

I do think that's what made the No King's Day protests such an opportunity. I try to give my friends who are despairing but too paralyzed to act one example of something to do - and those who went to No Kings or saw pictures now have a sense of belonging to help them find a next step.

Nearly 25,000 Berkshire residents at risk of losing heat if government shutdown continues If the government shutdown continues into November, more than 8,000 Berkshire residents that rely on the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program could lose heating. "Congress has to act right

Also hanging in the balance due to govt shutdown: federal heating aid.
Funds for LIHEAP, a free program that helps eligible households pay winter heating bills, traditionally get disbursed Nov. 1 and are used to heat homes through at least March 15
