the main thing that killed the local newspaper was Craigslist. not necessarily the website itself, but the move of classifieds to online forums. classified ads were literally the difference between local papers breaking even and losing money.

Honestly, the shift to computerization, especially in setting & layout, in the ‘80s & ‘90s, is what showed massive profit growth that made newspapers & magazines targets for conglomerates who assumed that profit margin & growth would continue, but you can’t just layoff your way to returns

The murderers of the news are many, chief among them vulture capitalists, big tech, & neoliberal political hacks. But also playing our part were those who wanted other people to labor for us for free, or wanted to replace news with indignation loops. We are complicit. I count myself in this number.

I can't get over this number: in 2007, there were 360,000 newspaper jobs. Now, there are 80,000. "My local paper sucked!" Sure. What sucks even more? The void. "I get all my news from the Guardian!" No, the Guardian doesn't report on your town council, your school board, local cops.

Russia thought we would not see Day 4, western leaders thought 4 weeks was overly ambitious.

This sounds unbelievable but its true: since Bezos acquired The Post, his wealth has grown tenfold and the Post has been cut in half.
