I also got to meet a fellow Vietnamese person who was the head of the Hanoi Association of People with Disabilities and we had a lovely chat. I didn't know much about the disability movement in Vietnam and was filled with hope to learn more.
07.06.2025 09:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A professional photo of Buffie hunched over a music stand, drawing on her iPad, pursing her mouth in focus. Buffie is a Southeast Asian woman with black shoulder length hair, wearing a powder pink blouse and bright blue pants, sitting on an electric wheelchair.

07.06.2025 09:45 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0An information-packed, colorful digital illustration capturing the main ideas of the panel βLeading The Way: Featuring the Most Impactful Commitments for Disability Inclusion in Development Cooperationβ. The title sits clearly in the middle, illustrated by three people with disabilities looking up and forward to the future. Fanning out from the title, a circle contains the commitments by the three co-hosts of the Global Disability Summit 2025: Germany, Jordan, and the International Disability Alliance. Surrounding the circle are 9 distinct sections featuring the commitments of 9 organizations, each illustrated with straightforward symbols and keywords. The sections are outlined with four alternating colors: yellow, green, orange, and blue. A light blue frame ties everything together as well as holds the event logos and the artistβs signature at the bottom. All the illustrations and texts are hand drawn and hand written, giving the artwork an organic look.
I realized I have not posted the full image on here. I'm very thankful for the opportunity to do #graphicrecording for the Commitment panel at the #GlobalDisabilitySummit 2025! It was a great learning opportunity to stroll around and see all the work being done around the globe!

07.06.2025 08:08 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0omg i stumbled across a fellow Berlin graphic recorder :D
would you like to chat a bit to share experience? (no pressure of course)
however i also want to say that some parts of my life did change more positively after my disabilities got worse such as my research skills, my understanding of disability justice, etc. but i wish there were other ways to acquire those growth lol
05.06.2025 18:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0absolutely, i saw a tiktok that compared having a chronic illness with someone having a child for the first time - your whole world is upended and you have so many things to consider now every time you want to do anything +
05.06.2025 18:44 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0and i think if people actually meant to say "find joy despite it all" people can say that instead, because this phrase better acknowledge the impact of disability while still encourage joy :)
05.06.2025 18:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0my disagreement was with the phrase "don't make your disability your personality" because it indicates a lack of understanding of how all-consuming my disabilities are and also the tone tend to be patronizing +
05.06.2025 18:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A sketchbook laid tilted, displaying a bright, colorful gouache portrait of a young Southeast Asian woman with shoulder length hair, cheekily glancing up. A brush and paint palette is included in the photo, as to suggest the process of how the portrait was painted. The vibrant red wrapping paper of Tony's chocolate is glued on the page to serve as the base for the portrait.
A zoom in of the person's face and hair, showing obvious thick brush strokes, especially the highlights in her eyes and glasses. Decorative stars drawn with colored pencil litter across her hair and face.

i can never get my nose right π₯² and yes that is Tony's chocolate as the background it's my favorite.

I understand the instinct to want to separate "disability" from "living your life" from "personality". But may I remind you of that Annie Dillard quote "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives"
I don't "let" my disability become my whole personality. It is already who I am.
As for hEDS (and its friends): I can no longer do a lot of activities that align with my identity that often/that well anymore. Whether it's drawing, painting, crochet, activism, hang with friends, or simply "have a think". I am more irritable, often not as sharp or funny as I want, (3/4)
31.05.2025 11:00 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I think for my neurodevelopment stuff or depression it's a bit easier to explain: this is how my brain has always worked. And I know "personality" is a complicated psychological concept, but for me my "self" reside in the brain, which is neurodivergent. (2/4)
31.05.2025 11:00 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I understand the intention behind this sentiment (that you should find joy despite it all), but it does reinforce this idea that "disability" and "the self" can be neatly separated.
Here's how my #EDS #autism and #ADHD influence "my whole personality" (1/4)

"Don't make your disability your personality"
Well if my disability is influencing how and even IF i can do things i that aligns with my identity/personality, it's a bit hard to not let it influence me.
