Looking up the platform towards Loughborough at Rothley Station on the Great Central Railway
It's been a few years but today the Actions finally made it back to the GCR for a days rail riding.
This station has a special place in my heart as my earliest memory of visiting a heritage railway with Senior Gricer. I was both thrilled and then terrified when a safety valve lifted next to us!
If you fancy playing with separation then have you tried recording from the MS capsule raw and mixing down to LR in the mix? This ability is one reason why MS is so popular as you can tweak later...
www.soundonsound.com/techniques/i...
When I'm performance recording I have the H6 central to the stage with the MS capsule and then two boundary mics on the wings - tend to route the MS to the centre channel of the 5.1 mix and the boundaries to the LR. I have a RODE short shotgun at the rear of the room that I mix to surround.
21.09.2025 11:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Though, word to the wise, if you have stereo mics physically separate you have a lot more issues with unwanted phase effects. It's why the two classic techniques are XY or MS (as the H6 does) as those get both capsules as physically co-located as possible.
21.09.2025 11:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Both good choices, I have the slightly older RODE 3.5mm and while.its not a miracle worker it's much better at helping the tablet livestream.
I do a lot of XLR work with the H6 though and also the mic module is common connection between H6/H5.
If you're looking for a direct replacement I'd go H5
Much appreciated π

18.09.2025 08:19 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0So far mine seems to be holding up, but will keep an eye on it.
I've had to do it for a whole load of AKG wireless mics and a pair of Nikon binos - soft touch plastic is horrible.
WD40 like spray is my go to, coupled with scrap cloth or jay cloth to really scrape off the crud
A trip on this remarkable train is still a special treat to myself. Β£200 for an en suite club room is a great deal.
Get the Highland Sleeper up, explore some of the Scottish rail routes during the day, get the Lowland Sleeper home.
To be fair I'm way beyond geeky but I always called that a 6v lantern battery, I never knew the official series number...

As well as to David's family my condolences to all his colleagues at the railway too.
Is the funicular running? It's an amazing trip I've done a few times, the journey down as you leave the tunnel from the top station is particularly good.

Peek and Autoglym polish sitting on the top of the belly tank
Mostly it involved a lot of prep in cleaning out the tubes and ash, a lot of Peek and Autoglym and loading coal, but great fun.
