Emmerich brought a German perspective to a monster movie: What if city infrastructure is compromised? Americans tend to find infrastructure annoyingly milquetoast, but part of the trauma of 9/11 was from the sudden loss of infrastructure. If Emmerich had worked with that, it could have resonated.
