I rolled credits on CAIRN. Extraordinary game worthy of the praise heaped on it. I hit a difficulty spike about midway through and almost didn't finish, but I'm very glad I kept at it. By the end I felt like I had climbed a whole damn mountain myself.

Coming from video games it was so refreshing and inspiring. They had a deep culture of nurturing respect for creatives that stretched back to the 70s. You really could see why the best storytellers wanted to pitch HBO first.

Oh for sure. I thought you might appreciate the perspective of someone who was both a fan and also inside the sausage factory. It was a wild time to be working there- just prior to all the buyouts and exodus of historic HBO leadership.

As a fan I wished that they had stretched that last short season into 2 or 3 full seasons. But all of the actors were ready to move on and leverage their newfound stardom, and the cost per episode was getting insane. Lots of pressure to wrap it up and focus on lower cost spinoffs.

I agree that Dani was always going to go “Full Targaryen” but they didn’t earn it in the final season as well as they could have. I worked for HBO at the time. I wasn’t on the show but could still see how the economics led to a dash to the finale. In some ways the show was a victim of its success.

My friends, I was finally able to stop by the hot new sandwich spot Fortuna in Seattle and try the Mortadella/pistachio cream sandwich. I'm here to tell you it's life changing.

Through happenstance I saw OBAA, Eddington and Bugonia all in a row and they formed a perfect triptych to describe this era. I was left with a profound sadness but also a glimmer of hope in the transformative power of art.

It was a wild time to be in the MSFT game studio! Aside from Bungie and Ensemble the game teams were divided by genre, not by studio identity. I was the part of FASA that got dropped in the RTS group. Thankfully Halo CE hit big and the studio model took over. We were all just figuring it out then.

I tried so hard to teach my mom how to use the Aeropress. Ended up buying instant coffee packets for her.

My exasperated teenager just yelled from the other room, "MOM! DAD! Grandma just made a 6-7 joke!!"
