My YA graphic novel MADELINE OF THE COMPASSES was longlisted for the 2025 Puffin Graphic Novel competition earlier this year. It's an urban fantasy about misfit kids embracing their outsider identities as they navigate the Fae Wilds. Currently workshopping it to submit to agents and publishers!

Moja: heh. Gorgon DEEZ NUTZ!! Mads: Stop saying that. Fern starts to stray from the group, hearing the rustle from the ivy. One of the leaves drops onto his hand and he discovers it is actually some kind of insect mimicking the shape of the ivy. Fern: Uh... guys?

It's slippy. Mads: get over it. Moja: Fern! Mads is being mean to me! If anyone comes, can we pretend we're doing our DofE? Mads: Yo, plug-1! Mothership is leaving, get on!

Mads: oh my god is that lightning! Moja: Argh! My shayla!! The three start to get sucked into the vortex. Mads: Don't - let-- go!!!

Page one of the pitchdoc. Something strange is going on in the little town of Nonsuch. But more importantly, fifteen year old Mads Brewer has it ROUGH. Mads is the kind of girl who spends most of her time playing her older brother's beat up acoustic guitar and talking to her imaginary boyfriend (his name is Floyd). She drews her eyeliner wings into gothic patterns and tells her classmates to get lost when they call her emo. To make matters worse, she's forced to help out at her parents' pub, where they live upstairs from. Her older brotehr Devon is the biggest loser she's ever met (he thinks the same thing about her). And Rhiannon, her grown-up sister, is an intolerably tryhard who's constantly complaining about Mads' grades and friends. The only one who she can remotely stand is her little brother Milton. Like Mads, Milton is a misfit. He's withdrawn, likes playing pretend by himself, and is far more concious of the family's concerns about his recent autism diagnosis than even their parents realise. Everything just FEELS bad at the moment, and it's impossible for Mads to communicate this to her parents in a way that gets them to understand. Besdies, they have bigger things to worry about, like the fact the pub is losing money and they might have to sell it and move. Things aren't much better for Mads at school, either. Nonsuch Girls' Grammar is brutal, with the worst headmaster in recorded history, and some people even say the building's haunted from when it used to be a Manor House. Without her two best friends, Mads would be totally lost. Moja (Aaliyah Shamal; Moja is a nickname) is a punk rocker who loves to skate and has a bone to pick with authority figures of any kind. Moja is the hyperactive kind of ADD, and is constantly fighting with her twin brother, Hazza. Fern Morrow is the only boy at school, having transitioned the summer prior. He's an awkward, neurospicy geek with a flat top and a wardrobe entirely consisting of 90s kitch. I AM OUT OF WORDS SORRY!!

Same. I flunked art school in second year because I didn't get adequate mental health support for bipolar. But I did when I went back to study elsewhere and I just graduated with a first. Shit literally makes a world of difference when it comes to access.
