"An 'istoric" (Cockney, estuary, etc) vs "Anhistoric" (RP). With the latter, it can be "a historic" in much the same way there is a distinction between "the historic" being pronounced as one would expect and being pronounced "thee historic"

It does very in the UK by accent, but weirdly the two biggest users of "an" come from different ends of the social spectrum - in some more working class southern accents, the "h" is completely dropped, in RP the "h" is pronounced but glides with the "an". In the latter, it also depends on emphasis.

Mayors are always an interesting one, as the problems facing cities (actual and perceived) and the popular solutions often aren't really fixed to party or ideology. Thinking about flagship policies of London mayors, not certain one could guess which were made by Johnson, Livingstone or Khan.

From my personal experience of the 90s wave, it was very much "parents showing their kid a show they loved when they were the same age" - 30 year gap lines it up pretty perfectly. My mother loved Gerry Anderson, and was genuinely happy that I was into it to.

I got into it as a child during the early 90s repeats. I was even one of the lucky few children who got an actual Tracy Island playset for Christmas in 1992.

One of my favourite examples (and in keeping) is RN uniform regulations in the 30s. Plenty of orders telling sailors not to alter uniforms in a certain way (having the front tailored into a U shape for example), before they finally give up and change the regulations to match what everyone was doing.
