Remember that Mandelson quote? "We are intensely relaxed about people getting filthy rich, as long as they pay their taxes". By "we" he meant the Labour government. Turns out that he - as a government minister - was lobbying on behalf of his filthy rich chums to ensure they paid less tax.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he unexpectedly killed himself, or sadden me to be honest.

The most unrealistic aspect of those movies now seems to be the endings where the wrongdoings are released to the media and it’s implied that the baddies are going to be punished.

It reminded me of a proto-Highsmith. Dix has some similarities with Tom Ripley (young, apparently unremarkable, an outsider, somewhat financially parasitic and, ultimately, psychopathic). I’ve never seen the film but Bogart doesn’t seem a great fit for the character in my opinion.
