Just be careful not to overcompensate. Once the players lose the illusion of a "fair" game determining the outcome, they will often lose interest as it's just storytime with the dm.

There is no reason to think I would be a good Pokémon trainer in real life. I have very little experience w/animals, no knowledge of animal health or training, not much physical fitness or practical know-how. At best I’d be a trainer w/ two level 4 pidgeys that you beat on the way to the first gym

Realistically, most of us would be the early route trainer with 4 cats, a dog, and a hamster or fish at best.
