Agreed- I absolutely would not have been able to solve this problem, even with AI help, without foundational software engineering knowledge!

02.06.2025 19:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I asked them to send me a $300 consulting invoice, as theyβd already scheduled my work and I might still need their help later.
I am very skeptical about a lot of AI hype but seeing this play out has been somewhat eye opening. And at this stage for me saving $3k is huge!
This is striking to me for a few reasons
- Claude 3.5 couldnβt solve this problem, but 4 could
- Itβs my first direct tangible example of AI replacing a paid software engineer
- Maybe Iβm next?
I was about to hire a consulting firm to do about $3k of software development work, stuff thatβs slightly outside of my wheelhouse (React Native + native Android), but I had to cancel because I ended up being able to get a workable solution with Claude 4 in about a day.

My Tuneshine arrived today and I love it so fucking much. Huge thanks to @tobobias.bsky.social for making such a cool thing and also to @reckless.bsky.social for mentioning it

11.04.2025 18:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβve thought about moving assembly to Canada or Mexico- Iβm fairly certain that would be legal, a lot cheaper in terms of tariffs and likely labor as well. But it would take months to set up and the tariffs are changing too often to take that risk. Plus I like assembling in the US!

11.04.2025 16:27 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0As the maker of a similar product told me last week, βitβs kind of ridiculous to raise prices on an LED boxβ
11.04.2025 14:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The picture is definitely pretty different from last week- with the latest tariffs my costs are creeping right up to the point of no longer being tenable. I got a shipment of parts in right before the >100% tariffs went in to effect and Iβm just kind of crossing my fingers that it mellows out.

05.04.2025 18:23 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0So Tuneshine now supports streaming services as well as most physical media. Check it out here. www.tuneshine.rocks
27.02.2025 17:33 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0But a record doesnβt change on its own- you have to manually put it on. Requiring one more step from your phone isnβt a big deal, and it avoids a whole potential privacy concern related to having a microphone listening and continuously Shazam-ing from your living room.
27.02.2025 17:33 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0For streaming services, itβs really important to have Tuneshine be low friction. Artists and albums change frequently when you listen through a playlist and Tuneshine needs to be able to keep up without requiring manual intervention.
27.02.2025 17:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I assumed that adding Shazam capabilities to Tuneshine would require a hardware revamp to add a microphone and a processor beefy enough to do audio processing alongside the networking and image processing it already does. So I dismissed it for the longest time as being something Iβd do βlater.β
27.02.2025 17:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Sometimes you get totally stuck thinking thereβs only one way to build a feature
Then suddenly it clicks and you realize you should have done it months ago.
This happened to me with adding the Shazam feature to the Tuneshine app, which just came out this week.
A picture of a TuneShine display - a lamp made up of 64 x 64 LEDs that displays the album artwork of what I'm listening to. Now it's showing a pale figure with black clothing and hair in the foreground. The background is all blues and whites, but it's not really possible to tell what it is.
Name that album cover!
