The Right’s Baseless Project to Link Trans People With Extremism A campaign for the FBI to adopt a new designation of “transgender ideology–inspired violence and extremism” is less about law enforcement than politics.

I looked into the group and the guy pushing the FBI to create a new designation of “transgender ideology–inspired violence and extremism”—itself a political project, meant to conflate the fact of trans people’s existence with extremism.

Testimony before a subcommittee of the Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, House of Representatives, 79th Congress, 2nd session, May 28 and 29, 1946, cited by Hofstadter. The quote reads:

"
One Congressman objected in these words to including the social sciences in the National Science Foundation:

'Outside of myself, I think everyone else thinks he is a social scientist. I am sure that I am not, but I think everyone else seems to believe that he has some particular God-given right to decide what other people ought to do. . . . The average American does not want some expert running around prying into his life and his personal affairs and deciding for him how he should live, and if the impression becomes prevalent in the Congress that this legislation is going to establish some sort of an organization in which there would be a lot of short-haired women and long-haired men messing into everybody’s personal affairs and lives, inquiring whether they love their wives or do not love them and so forth,
you are not going to get your legislation.'

The fragment "legislation is going to establish some sort of an organization in which there would be a lot of short-haired women and long-haired men messing into everybody’s personal affairs and lives" is highlighted.

My current read of Richard Hofstadter's *Anti-Intellectualism in American Life* (1963) is genuinely disarming me in how quintessentially transphobic this genre of conservative rhetoric already was in the 1940s. This example is just one of many, from the first 50 pages alone

A Permanent State of Exception in El Salvador - Dissent Magazine In cooperation with gangs and with massive popular support, Nayib Bukele is cracking down on dissidents and massively expanding the state’s carceral apparatus.

In Bukele’s #ElSalvador, he is the only person who is above the law. The road ahead is long. Even the first step—telling the truth—is officially considered a crime.
My contribution for the latest @dissentmag.bsky.social, a powerful issue that comes out today.

"Not taking dance lessons is a common mistake
among men. They fail to realize that dancing is one of the few things
a man can learn when he’s young that will come in handy later. Men
who know how to dance—even a few basic steps—will never end up
sad and alone, with nobody to play with, because women will always
be looking for that rare man who can dance. They’ll take him to night
clubs and parties and on cruises, and they’ll go all mushy after a
simple waltz." from "Gotta Dance," Collected in I Used to Be Charming

Overcrowded cells. Unsanitary conditions. Limited access to food and water.

These are the conditions that ICE has created at 26 Federal Plaza, which eleven elected officials sought to expose. Instead, they were arrested.

They must be released right now — and inspectors let in.

one of the nice things about being an adjunct in an era of overt academic repression by fascists is that i still say whatever i want to students... like what are they going to do, continue not giving me health insurance? take away the job no one wants?

like the way he signed all his texts "my love" really reminds me of how John would sign all his letters to Liz "deep tongue kiss" even as she became dour and had moved on. anyway this remains worldshatteringly historic for trans women in culture despite all precedent

if the evidence is real (legitimately big if) this case really does feel strikingly similar to John Wojtowicz -- a mostly uneducated white guy bungles an act of egoistic passion (which he has mistaken for love) after a downtrodden woman offers him a modicum of affection. or whatever, who knows

New Yorkers Keep Dying on Rikers Island. Does Anyone Actually Care? Will public officials ever stop the deaths in City jails? Will New Yorkers ever make them?

Three people died on Rikers Island in the last two weeks. Twelve people have died there so far this year. Forty-five since Eric Adams took office.

Does anyone with any power care to stop this?

Do New Yorkers care to make them?

Rockwell Kept One Promise
By Harry Kelly
Of Associated Press
ARLINGTON, Va.—George Lincoln Rockwell talked big. He surrounded himself with bully boys in Nazi uniforms, called himself fuehrer and told everyone he would be elected President of the United States in 1972. But he died alone Friday in a 10-year-old car—the windshield shattered by a sniper's bullets—after doing his own laundry in a laundromat.
