Elvis in IMAX: How Newly Found Footage Became an Immersive Documentary

Good morning! For @nytimes.com, I had the immense pleasure of talking to Baz Luhrmann and his collaborator Jonathan Redmond about how they combed through boxes of long-forgotten Elvis footage from a salt mine in Kansas to create their marvelous new documentary "EPiC." Gift link:

I regret engaging, I should have assumed this was mostly chauvinism about the more informal nature of American English, especially in sports coverage

Not really. β€œMost successful” is a question of judgement, β€œwinningest” is a statement of fact

21.02.2026 14:44 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

That does not actually specify that the person in question has won the most. Is a 10 time silver medalist more successful than a 4 time gold medalist?

Do you know a less clumsy adjectival phrase? I really don’t see a huge difference between β€œBob bobson is the winningest skier in Olympic history” and β€œBob bobson is the skier who has won the most in Olympic history”

Do you know another word that means the same thing?

I imagine that even if you want to pay for them, it’s hard to get large amounts of trained extras outside of NY/LA/London

I am very annoyed that people think 'rich' means 'that guy has a mercedes and takes a vacation to italy once a year' and not 'that guy has more money than 40% of the world combined and can decide to start or stop wars based on his personal prejudices'

the sums involved are incomprehensible

In addition to all of the other problems, the fact that live service games feel obliged to listen to sweaty hardcores is a big part of why they’re usually such a creative dead end

I hate how Bungie handles worldbuilding and plot

I hate to break it to you, but both critics and the long term Bethesda player base really liked base building, even if they didn’t like the games. It’s going nowhere

19.02.2026 12:58 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Not saying you’re wrong about it critically, just that those elements are pretty popular with their player base, and they’re very monetizable

I think you’re gonna be disappointed if you think this means they’re moving away from base/ship building and/or life sim stuff

She never lived to see this moment, but it’s worth remembering that none of this would have happened without Virginia Giuffre.

She had the courage to speak out against power and privilege when it was just her word against Andrew’s.

Thanks to her, justice & accountability may finally have its day.

Yeah, EA was forcing all of their subsidiaries to use EA owned engines for a while there

And then despite doing all that, and it resulting in the highest selling game in BioWare history (and the best selling CRPG until BG3) they could not get a sequel off the ground unless it had multiplayer

*port DAI to 360 and PS3. I know nothing about how Frostbite made development harder, but the art director said that they β€œhad to do new consoles, a new engine, new gameplay, build the hugest game that we've ever made, and build it to a higher standard than we ever did, with tools that don't exist”

18.02.2026 23:13 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

They had to fight tooth and nail to get production budgets on every single DA game after the first, got served with an 16 month schedule for 2, were forced to use Frostbite for DAI (an engine so ill-suited they had to program stats, saving, and cutscenes/conversations themselves), forced to DAI

I can’t even imagine what it must feel like for Mike Laidlaw or David Gaider. Especially after seeing BG3 come out and be feted like a sea change in RPG history. I like BG3, but it’s no BG2 or DAO or DAI

Which is why Whedon and Gunn succeed where their imitators fail. Say what you will about either dude, but they aren’t afraid of their characters having real friction with each other

The internal view of the whole series is baffling. It’s their biggest selling series by a mile (DAI almost outsold the Mass Effect trilogy combined), but both studio leadership and EA treated it as a redheaded step child compared to ME
