"Since the failed Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum, Australia isn’t in the business of being bold. It does business as usual. Boldness, after all, attracts attention. Boldness is risky and doesn’t carry the same return on investment as gas or coal."

Me Australia's failed COP31 bid.

If you don't trust Google then you probably shouldn't use Gmail, but the claim it's training AI on your emails and attachments has *no real source that i have been able to find whatsoever*

And they said on the record that it doesn't matter whether you have the smart settings on or not, they don't.

Very happy about this. We will also bridge the world of open technology research with the tooling and standards our communities have created to make data and research reproducible and knowledge accessible. #openscience #dataquality

36 Months Unveils β€˜The First Best Summer Ever' Calling On Teens To Reclaim Social Media-Free Holidays The kids might be in for the best summer ever. Though the adults won't be, if they keep hiking alcohol tax.

Stuck in an airport & see 36 Months folk use the "delay" language.

Apparently it's going to be the "first best summer ever" ...

(Calling it a ban makes sense in terms of the impact on under 16s.)

Does the delay language originally come from Wippa & Co?

Being a lawyer-type, I refer to it in long-winded fashion as the social media minimum age obligation :)

Both Britney Spears’ β€œToxic” and Kylie Minogue’s β€œCan’t Get You Out of My Head” Are, Randomly, Likely Written About the Same Veterinarian with His Own Reality Show Yeah, let us explain.

My favourite is that an Irish vet is the subject of both a hit song by Britney Spears and another one by Kylie Minogue

And others, for example Bluesky, have already implemented some forms of age assurance in the UK ...

The letter writers are being convinced by LLMs that they have made monumental discoveries that they don't remotely begin to understand, not even to the point of being able to explain for themselves what they think they have found.

It will be interesting to see if any platforms that have self-assessed as falling within the definition of age-restricted social media platform but not publicly assessed by eSafety will comply with the minimum age obligation.

Judges have become β€˜human filters’ as AI in Australian courts reaches β€˜unsustainable phase’, chief justice says Stephen Gageler warns the speed of AI’s development could be outstripping people’s ability to β€˜comprehend its potential risks and rewards’

Gageler CJ describes #auslaw judges as "human filters" of AI generated legal argument, a description which could also be attached to legal (and other) academics: www.theguardian.com/law/2025/nov... ping @drjoemcintyre.bsky.social

The public understanding of the law may have been higher if the Government had not failed to hold the public consultation on the rules setting out exclusions on the ban.

But instead the Government has focussed on broad messaging ...

21.11.2025 01:14 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

This (deliberate) lack of clarity in definition & therefore the law means many are surprised that Roblox, for example, has not been assessed by eSafety as falling within the definition & therefore "the ban".

21.11.2025 01:10 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The PM & Minister should have anticipated much earlier that the public would want greater certainty than that provided by the very broad definition of age-restricted social media platform.

21.11.2025 01:08 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I agree it is confusing for the public.

The PM & the Comms Minister have not clearly explained how the law works.

Instead they have focussed on generalities about "social media".

21.11.2025 01:07 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

We should be careful about suggesting that the minimum age obligation only applies to those platforms publicly assessed by eSafety.

That's not how the legislation is written - the obligation applies to any platform that falls within the definition.

21.11.2025 00:57 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

For example, in my view, Bluesky falls within the definition of an age-restricted social platform.

That eSafety has not publicly assessed it as falling within the definition does not mean it is out of scope.

21.11.2025 00:55 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I agree it is odd that the announcement of the assessment of Twitch falling within the definition of age-restricted social media platform was not made as the same time as Kick.

Also note any platform that assesses it falls within the definition must comply not just those named by eSafety.
