NEW: GLOBAL RENEWABLES OVERTAKES COAL

How the heck did that happen so quickly?!...🧡

The main story on BBC 6 Music News this morning is that a β€˜boat carrying migrants is on its way to France’

Delivered in the same upbeat tone as England winning the women’s Euros.

The migration β€˜debate’ in this country is unmoored from reality, and the media-political complex is feeding it

Reform says it wants to drill in the North Sea so the UK is not dependent on foreign oil.

Is that why its climate panel is sponsored by the Heartland Institute, a U.S. think tank funded by ExxonMobil? πŸ€”

NEW: Cheaper batteries mean near-24/365 solar is now economicβ˜€οΈ

We analysed 18 years of hourly insolation data at 12 places, to see how close to 24/365 electricity it was possible to get.

The sunniest places get over 90% - and up to 99% - of the way... from just $100/MWh. 🧡

How can you square an ambition to win the league with having lowest wages to revenue ratio in the league?

How do you justify constant ticket price rises and removing senior concessions?

Instead you have a tedious and hard to follow abstract conversation about football governance.

Only 3 years left – new study warns the world is running out of time to avoid the worst impacts of climate change Planet Earth is living on borrowed time, a new global report reveals. The world must stop burning fossil fuels now and take urgent steps to reduce global warming.

Nice article; poor headline.

It is both too late to save some things and time enough to save others. The Earth System has numerous feedbacks, both positive and negative. Tipping point thresholds are diverse - we've crossed some already but many can be avoided.

Hurricane forecasting has doubled in accuracy during the past 15 years thanks mostly to NOAA researchers at the Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Laboratory in Miami.

Guess which scientific lab the new Trump budget is going to zero out entirely.

And not just this lab but *all* NOAA labs.

Meta has been accused of using faulty data to train an artificial intelligence climate tool, with scientists claiming the Big Tech group raised false hopes about the feasibility of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at scale.
The tech company said last year that it had helped researchers with the elusive problem of identifying materials to efficiently remove carbon dioxide from air, by publishing a β€œgroundbreaking” data set on which it also trained free-to-use machine learning models.
But none of the 135 materials that Meta’s research said could bind COβ‚‚ β€œstrongly” had that characteristic, while some did not exist, according to researchers from Heriot-Watt University and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL).
β€œI wish they had computed a bit less and thought a bit more,” said Berend Smit, a professor of chemical engineering at EPFL, describing some of Meta’s results as β€œnonsense”. β€œYou get the impression that the Big Tech mentality is do first, think later.”

This is just going to be the first of many, many stories you are going to read about big tech companies faking "AI for climate" claims. The sheer volume of AI-climate-washing going on right now is huge, and it's very likely most of the claims are fabricated or exaggerated

Rapid increases in satellite-observed ice sheet surface meltwater production - Nature Climate Change Surface melt is an important component of ice sheet dynamics, but for many remote regions the melt rates are mainly known from models. Here the authors present satellite observations of melt rates for...

🧊 Ice sheets are melting faster

A 31-year satellite study shows sharp rises in meltwater from Greenland and East Antarctica, regions once too cold are now hotspots.

This could speed up sea-level rise and threaten ice shelf stability.

Revealed: Michael Gove Threw Money at a Broke Council to Crush Climate Protest | Novara Media As an Essex council cut a poverty hardship fund and cancelled a new medical centre, Michael Gove gave it money to pursue an injunction against climate protesters. Joe Sandler Clarke reports.

Thurrock council has debts of close to Β£1bn, but it has still been able to pay top London law firms to support an injunction stopping climate protests.

Turns out the council had help from government to pay their legal bills last year.

Most of the greenhouse gas reductions in the US have been an accidental byproduct of the switch from coal to methane gas, and by the way, new research suggests that methane gas leaks *far* more than the EPA estimates, which means even those reductions may be illusory. Whee!

How the Senate GOP’s New Tax on Renewables Could β€˜Kill’ the Industry As bad as previous drafts of the reconciliation bill have been, this one is worse.

Republicans are now suddenly planning to TAX renewable energy, transforming the repeal of the IRA from a challenge to a full-blown crisis for American solar and wind.

I spent the last 24 hours putting this story together to explain why.
