If your job is anything *besides* trying to make a corporation more money, it has become monumentally harder in 2025. It is crazy how true that is across fields: law (immigration, civil rights, environmental, etc); the arts; scientific research; education; nonprofit; medicine; public policy, etc.

Unfortunately I am not sure which narrator they mentioned (I was also wondering about that) but the Libby version is with Kate Reading and she’s doing a very capable job.

Shout out to the #natbookfest panel that was praising the audiobook version of Middlemarch. I read it a decade ago, and of course it was good, but they were so right—the narrator really brings out the humor. It’s absolutely delicious.

Wow, am I glad to see this. When I saw that Dartmouth was one of the nine, I definitely thought it could go the other way.

Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

I wrote a paragraph of my new novel today. Just one. It's more than I've written all week. I guess that's just the kind of season it is.

I have also dramatically pulled back my book purchases--because I had no job for five months! I hate it. I don't care what the numbers say; I am convinced that DC is fully in a depression. How can we not be, when half the city is either unemployed or expecting to lose their job any day?

It’s actually brilliant. If you police away everything people use to make themselves feel comfortable/human during pregnancy, you will wind up driving down the birth rate in every community EXCEPT the ones in which ruthlessly dominate women. It’s brilliant and perfectly evil.
