Donald Trump’s Truth Social platform is to offer users the chance to trade on the outcome of elections and sports games, extending the US president and his family’s involvement in the booming prediction markets sector.
The Trump Media & Technology Group, which controls the social media platform, on Tuesday announced it would partner with Crypto.com to introduce “Truth Predict”, which would allow users “to react instantly to developments in major current events”.
Crypto.com previously donated $11mn to Trump causes. Earlier this year the Securities and Exchange Commission closed an investigation into the company, and on Friday, it announced that it applied for a US bank charter.
In August, TMTG also signed a multibillion-dollar deal to buy Cronos, the tokens issued by Crypto.com, which sent their price soaring.
“For too long, global elites have closely controlled these markets — with Truth Predict, we’re democratising information and empowering everyday Americans to harness the wisdom of the crowd, turning free speech into actionable foresight,” said Devin Nunes, TMTG’s head.
Excuse me? So the company the President currently owns is teaming up with a cryptocurrency company to create a prediction market, which will take bets... on things the President himself has quite a lot of control over?
Gosh, I'm sure nothing bad will happen.

🚨 Why do people protest against authoritarian regimes even when facing extreme danger? 🚨
In our new paper on Romania's 1989 Revolution, we find that communities exposed to the communist Gulag showed 5x higher dissent levels.

Opinion | The White House has a shutdown escape hatch — but it's likely illegal
Trump's budget chief, Russell Vought, is using creative accounting to make sure the president's priorities don't suffer during the shutdown.
new from me: I looked at the wild levels of illegality on display as WH budget chief, Russell Vought, shuffles money around to ensure Trump's top priorities remain funded during the shutdown. it's a play meant to lessen the pain the GOP feels even absent Congress actually appropriating those funds

New in PN: How the Supreme Court taught Trump to rewrite history
"If you’re wondering where Trump learned the trick of recasting American history as uniquely belonging to him, look no further than the current Supreme Court’s manipulation of the core legal principle of stare decisis."

An article “Farage pledges to expel hundreds of thousands of migrants” /”We will stop this scam on the British people” (Sept, 21) stated the cost of 800,000 “Boriswave” migrants gaining ILR will be at least £234 billion during their lifetimes. This figure was from a third party organisation which has confirmed it is disputed and will be updated. We are happy to correct the record.
Yet another lie about immigration from the Telegraph.
Yet another correction.
I explained why the Centre for Policy Studies numbers were nonsense 6 months ago, and the CPS has admitted I was right. Didn't stop the Telegraph from printing the lie.

Gaza officials say children killed in strike as Israeli military admits 'error'
Six children waiting for water are among those killed in an Israeli air strike, emergency service officials say.
An insult both to our intelligence and our conscience. The deliberate massacre of starving civilians is a fundamental component of Israel's eliminationist strategy. We all know this.

For many years, ICE has agreed not to deport certain people for humanitarian reasons, including this mother of three with no criminal record who has strong ties to her community.
Now the Trump admin needs "easy" deportations; so they're revoking stays of removal without any warning at all.

Int’l Human Rights Body Rules on US Case of Migrant That Was Tortured, Killed
The findings could set a precedent for other cases before the commission involving US police-perpetrated killings.
Nearly 15 years after Anastasio Hernández Rojas’ wife began pushing for justice in her husband’s killing, an international human rights commission found that U.S. border officials were responsible for his death — and that they tortured him before he died.
