Andover quickly outgrew the 300-seat Jenny Lind Chapel and constructed a new church in 1867, seating 1,000. The town never grew bigger than about 500 people, but the church drew congregants from various nearby towns like Galesburg, Illinois.

The cemetery is full of gravestones listing dates of death from the 1850s cholera epidemic, and from 1864 and 1865 due to a smallpox epidemic.

the Figge museum in Davenport, Iowa, has an exhibit of cats in art which for now features an addition by yr humble obed’t poaster.

The other was that it inspired me to look her up. She was a memorable teacher. More than English, I learned about having high standards from her. (Not that I always live up to them.)

I looked her up - she passed three years ago. This is a great picture, probably from right around the time I was her student. She was, in fact, tough and persistent (she did smile like this, but not too often). A life well lived.

When my job was eliminated, I was old enough for retirement health insurance. It’s not free! But it has enabled me to choose what I want to do (managing a small arts org) rather than immediately looking for whatever work comes with benefits.

The owner class lives in fear of this becoming the norm.
