Warning Sirens Were Silent Ahead of Deadly Tornado in St. Louis, City Says

In St. Louis, the sirens to warn people of a tornado threat were not activated by the City Emergency Management Agency before a deadly tornado hit on Friday, and a backup to activate the mechanism that is operated by the Fire Department was broken.

I guess what I'm trying to say is if you can't think critically about how politics has affected every single aspect of this event,

if you don't understand what has happened here,

if you don't know our communities,

if you're not down here doing the work, clearing debris, or donating,

SHUT. UP.

Roads blocked by debris have been slow to get cleared. Funding for infrastructure continues to be cut.

We have at a local, state, and federal level cut social welfare programs to fund a military and police state. Missourians, especially STL & KC, are not ignorant to this. It's not new information.

But also because we knew what was coming with a 2nd Teump administration. We didn't vote for him, but we are harmed by him.

There were no sirens. NOAA & NWS funding was slashed.

There is no FEMA assistance for victims. FEMA's funding was slashed.

And thankfully, from what I've seen on the ground, the people have shown up for each other. We are taking care of each other as best we can, and people are helping according to their skillset.

We aren't waiting for government help. Not least because a lot of folk are used to being ignored by them.

So when this tornado hit the north side, a largely African-American community, and hit it hard, a lot of the residents there already knew they would struggle to get help from anyone outside their own communities. They were asking for help from neighbors since day one.

STL is *very* segregated due, in part, to a bunch of racist policies from decades ago, followed by an unwillingness to reckon with our history and acknowledge the systems we built on that racism that are still affecting us. As well as, frankly, just open racism.

There is no one in the city of St. Louis waiting to be "saved" by our governments. We already know we cannot count on them. Our communities are taking care of each other.

This tornado hit a disproportionately underserved community.

The state has been so gerrymandered over the last several years that we are guaranteed to be red when we, as an electorate, vote for progressive policies. We cannot do anything about it. Our state legislature is actively overturning things Missourians VOTED for.

Aside from the fact that it's a horrid thing to say to people who've just gone through tragedy, let's talk about it.

STL did not vote for this administration. We are a blue dot in a red state. And the only reason we're in a "red" state is because our state government has redrawn district lines.

If you dont know by now, St. Louis, Missouri (especially the north side) was hit by an EF3 tornado last Friday.

There were no sirens. There has been no federal response/assistance with the destruction.

The internet's response has been: "Where's your savior Trump now? You voted for him."🧵

FYI: St. Louis city officials will conduct a planned tornado siren test at 3 p.m. today, according to the fire department.

The test will likely last around 20 minutes.

A lot of people on the internet not from MO are wondering how we voted to protect the right to choice and for other progressive policies but also voted in republican representatives that are now overturning the will of the people.
