Political expression should be protected β€” yes, even in a yearbook Censorship of political ideas only hinders students from becoming engaged citizens.

Border bill would give authorities sweeping security powers and restrict asylum claims The bill would grant Ottawa the power to halt or cancel the processing of immigration applications en masse if it is deemed in the public interest

While the Conservative Party did not win the election it appears that a conservative party did. This is more than disappointing.

Had the Conservatives been led by a more moderate leader - like Erin O’Toole or Jean Charest - they would have swept to power. Progressive voters would have been less afraid of a Tory gov and would not have abandoned the NDP.1/2

… says so. It could have been and could be otherwise. The people who reside in this particular territory (most of them a far distance from the oil) have no inherent claim to the resource.

β€œWe have the oil” is an odd statement. Who is the β€˜we’ and what does β€˜have’ mean here. Leaving aside the claims that Indigenous communities might have, the prov of Alta - an entity that is the creation of the Cdn constitution - has jurisdiction over natural resources only because the Cdn const.. 1/2

Erin O’Toole would have cleaned up. But the party wants what the party (the base) wants.

The active element of the CPC - the base - is hard right, even extreme and will no doubt continue to dominate nomination meetings, and leadership races. A moderate CPC leader would have won a clear majority. Still more than 40% voted for a Cdn version of the Republican Party.

I assume it’s not β€˜woke’ if the researcher comes to the β€˜correct’ conclusion - eg that Indigenous peoples were not wronged or that race is not a social construct (to quote Trump) etc.

Free speech on campus is a good thing. But once again who decides when limits on the right are justified - in the classroom, in the meeting room, in residence, in the open areas of the campus? This is all too Trump-like.

And who will decide when research is β€˜woke’? When it is concerned with things such as religious freedom and discrimination or free speech and the regulation of hate speech or disinformation? Will the judgment it is woke depend on whether the writer reaches the β€˜correct’ conclusion on these issues?

Of course those who have risen to power based on disinformation have an interest in preventing any attempt to limit or discourage the spread of disinformation.

Harper’s Magazine letter exposes the crisis in our public discourse The Harper’s Magazine letter’s call for respect and tolerance is empty because there is no agreement in the community about which forms of speech should be tolerated and which fall outside the scope of legitimate discussion.

In 2010 I pitched a story to the Walrus about the spread of disinformation online (at the time on blogs) and how this was becoming a greater threat to public discussion than state censorship. They passed.
