If the desire is to continue to address the distortion I am sure it can be figured out, but if the political desire were to cloak the fact that European cars produced in China get a tariff reduction through the backdoor when exported to Europe it would be a different story…

After the tariff deal is before the next necessary adjustment: if the new tariff line on vehicles means a knock down for everyone by 7.5 percentage points then the EV tariffs on China that address the distortion will have to go up… @sandertordoir.bsky.social

Quick take on EU-China (or China-EU) climate joint statement:
We'll do more of the same and we'll commit to make some commitments later.

vs. last joint statement back in 2021 - in which China stated that it was going to 'strictly control coal consumption (it didn't)

Stimmt. Ich glaube, manche sehen die Risiken durchaus – sind aber defaitistisch.

Warum glauben so viele in Berlin, Deutschland könne Chinas Industriepolitik nichts entgegensetzen?

Dabei haben wir riesige fiskalische Spielräume und eine starke industrielle Basis.

We knew China's rush to install solar and wind was going to be wild but WOW😮. The solar panels & wind turbines China installed in May alone, in a single month, will generarate as much electricity as:
-Poland
-Sweden
-Norway
-the UAE
-North Carolina&Maryland or
-Washington&Wyoming

This was more the art of the fold rather than the art of the deal…the U.S. had to retreat and this strengthens the hand of negotiators in Beijing. EU will likely face even more confident counterparts in China. But lots of uncertainty remains.

For Europe it means that none of the China challenges have become smaller & that the US negotiations could become harder.Focus on diversifying trade and strengthen competitiveness, enhance defense measures w/ regard to China, single market reform - we know what we have to do. We just have to do it..

So we are back to square one on China-US trade relations for 90 days. Would be a massive exaggeration to call this agreement to de-escalate a „deal“, uncertainty remains high, but one thing is clear: China is certainly in a better position now than before the tariff escalation began.

China has been de-risking its relationship from the U.S. for the past 8 years, the measures are going to hurt their economy too, but they expect to hurt Trump more. They can manage supply on agriculture and energy, they have planned for this. It comes at a cost, but not reacting was not an option.

EU is thus extending a hand to US admin to work together on China (if Washington wants to…) and is sending a signal to Beijing that it cannot expect current Brussels approach to address Chinese market distortions and overcapacities to magically disappear- quite the contrary.

54 per cent it is…for now. Staggered on top of each other. More could come. The argument that Trump in the end would be weak on China really does not hold anymore (has been a very European argument all along…) www.nytimes.com/2025/04/02/b...
