27.05.2025 20:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I got the point, it's just that others are interpretating that same data differently in light of (or as part of) their seeing it differently, e.g. bsky.app/profile/tim-...

18.01.2025 21:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This video looks to indicate that it did hit his stomach after all, and not his arm as I had come to suspect. Thanks for unearthing it!
18.01.2025 21:11 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I'd imagine only Arsenal fans care to debate the point, and I've seen a lot of baffled disagreement between people who can only see it one way and not the other.
18.01.2025 20:51 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes, if you're a person who sees it hitting the arm rather than the stomach, that's the way you'll interpret it! And I'm not saying that's necessarily either correct or incorrect as an interpretation, just that lots of people aren't interpreting it in that way.
18.01.2025 20:50 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0It's clearly not 'absurd' if such a large number of people can only see it hitting his stomach, and (similarly to you, but the opposite) can't understand how anybody can see the ball hitting the arm at all. I know it's frustrating not to be able to see what they're seeing, but they aren't just lying
18.01.2025 20:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I would merely be interested.
18.01.2025 20:36 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm not sure any of that is particularly relevant, but I understand if you're having trouble perceiving the video in the way other people are (including a certain Ollie Watkins, who, in his post-match interview, indicates that he is among those who can only see it as deflecting off Havertz' stomach)
18.01.2025 20:33 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There's no reason why it wouldn't - the ball is already on the way up having bounced up off the turf. I'm not necessarily taking a firm stand on which is correct, just pointing out that it's totally possible to see two very different things as happening here, which clearly people are!
18.01.2025 20:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I'd be really interested to see a poll on this - how many can only see it hitting stomach, how many only arm? From the responses I've seen, I'd guess more than half can only see it hitting his arm.
18.01.2025 20:18 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0From this angle, I don't think you can tell. Would need to see a couple of other angles to know, I think.
18.01.2025 20:14 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Whichever way you see it, try seeing it the other way as you watch it over. Eventually something clicked in my brain and I could see what other people were seeing.
18.01.2025 20:12 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0So did I, the first 100 times I watched it. I couldn't see it the other way. Then I realised they think it's coming off his *right* arm at the exact same moment. It's a genuine yanny/laurel, blue-black/white-gold dress perceptual thing.
18.01.2025 20:05 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0It's an optical illusion. A gestalt phenomenon. You can either see it as deflecting off his stomach or see it as deflecting off his right forearm, but not both. It's a weird perceptual quirk. Pretty sure the former is correct, and I sincerely hope VAR didn't just look at this one misleading angle.

18.01.2025 19:54 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 6 π 0It's an optical illusion! From this angle, you can make your brain see it deflecting either off the left part of his stomach, or off his right forearm. I'm fairly sure the other angles are only consistent with the former interpretation. Surely they didn't only look at this angle and get hoodwinked?
